Finally saw "The Raid 2," best martial arts film ever?
« on: July 22, 2015, 09:42:04 PM »
I neglected this based on bogus advice and my general disdain for sequels, and boy am I glad I came to the party no matter how late :-) probably the best martial arts or even action film I've ever seen. That fight in the kitchen alone was worth it, add to it what that girl could do with those hammers and this film is a classic.

Anyone else a fan? I'd add this to Ip Man, and Ong Bak for "modern" classics. If there is any better martial arts films let me know...

An hour and a half of elbows in faces and faces in walls. What's not to like?

Tony Jaa's films are amazing for fight scenes too. He doesn't go in for all the wire shit you get in Chinese films but does fly twelve feet through the air to deliver double knee strikes to the face.

Ong Bak and Warrior King are good. Don't expect Oscar nominated acting. Just good fighting.

I loved Ong Bak but it was G-rated compared to the violence in Raid 2. The baseball bat guy fight was so intense and ended so violently it was shocking. It was what Tarrantino tried to make with Kill Bill , but even though he had the violence, the actual martial arts skill was no where near what you see in Raid 2. And while there is plenty of fantasy type combat it's just enough to make it fun, still plenty of real fighting techniques: knees, elbows, more punches than jump spin kicks and a ton of throws and even double leg takedowns/slams. Great movie, best I've ever seen by far.

I loved "Hard Boiled" great movie that ages well. Japanese movies have a strange pacing to them IMO, some of their horror movies are like this, I think with the subtitles and cultural oddities I tend to lose interst too easy. Loved "Shogun Assassin," but again that seems to be cuz it's like 7 movies splicing all the good parts together.

After all the Bruce Lee, Jet Lin and Jackie Chan (and the Master of the Flying Guilotine--best old school movie IMO) movies some of my favorites from 80's and 90's were: King of the Kickboxers (under rated one of the best), The Perfect Weapon, all Chuck Norris flix, Blood Fist 1 & 2, Bloodsport and Kickboxer, Above the Law, Marked for Death, Hard to Kill, are the ones I remember most. Modern I love Ip Man, Ong Bak, and Black Dynamite and Kill Bill 1 & 2.

However, the Raid 2 is so superior to all these in terms of action, real skill, little CGI, and mind blowing violence it's in it's own category. Can't recommend it enough, actually rewatched it to make sure it was as good as I thought but it's actually better :-)

It was awesome.  But nothing beats the scene if Raid 1 where he jumped backwards and impaled the guys throat on the bottom of the broken door.
