why is it that you can have the most depressed person in the world, give him MDMA and he will be the happiest he has been EVER in is life within 20 minutes.

Think before you speak minion.

Yeah and what about the comedown? Seratonin drops below base levels and you want to kill yourself. Law of diminishing returns also kicks in so you can never regain same high as first time... mdma is fun if you can do it odd time. Too much leads to long term issues (memory loss lowered iq) and also lowers base seratonin levels so less happy off it.

Another example is how do you top winning the lottery? It's all downhill from there. One massive high followed by fleeting moments of hedonism til you drop below where you were.

Anyway, side issue.

I'm with Kwon. You need the lows to appreciate the highs. That's why they say youth is wasted on the young. Imagine having the rubber joints and the energy and enthusiasm you had as a kid now?

To answer OP I get more pleasure now; more balanced mentally so I can cope and be resilient to hardship and appreciate good times even if that just means having a productive week or laughing my ass off to podcast I listen to (thebiggestproblemintheun iverse.com) with my son. I've had the hedonism and it was fun but I grew out of it.

There are the occasional good times, but, for the most part, life is a fvcking grind.

Good to hear Che, for me it was the other way around.

It was great until around 35+ when it turned into hell.

It's somewhat decent these days though but never thought i'd manage to get through to my 40s during that rough patch.

Depression?
Loss of loved ones, not one but several within a short timespan.

Took a toll on me.

Depression?

You can be depressed even if all is ostensibly well. If you get through shit times you get stronger and appreciate good times.

I'm probably not alone in having had money before and lost it all and now I have it again but you bet I learned from my mistakes and enjoy it more having lived in shit accommodation, been in debt and felt hopeless.

I'd love another kid now I've a house and garden and stable life... pity about the juice.

Like in bodybuilding you need resistance (read: suffering/obstacles) in life to build strength.
In the long run suffering is the better of the two.

There are the occasional good times, but, for the most part, life is a fvcking grind.

Sitting in traffic and spending half the day emailing and contacting clients isn't fun but the moment you get a wad of cash or a thanks for help alleviates the shitty tedious stuff you have to do.

I worked my balls off and risked money since i got back from hols... few days later after stress, driving a shitload and networking I trebled money. 3 days of stress but I'd rather that than a week triddling thumbs and praying for a call for work.

It doesn't matter.  Both are transient states that evaporate before you can put 'em on the scales to weigh up.  Besides, ain't a hard time been invented that I cannot handle.  Fact.  Jack.

This is the correct mindset.

A huge fan of a few things in (my) life, but overall, not a fan of life.

Mostly, I'd imagine, because of the true ugliness of so many members of our species.

(Like the fella in this thread who prattles on about being a man of god. These dim bulbs never can come to the realization that "faith" has led man to the outer reaches of horror.)
