This guy's been a Canadian metal joke for 30 fuckin' years. Having said this, I do have an American friend who digs the first couple of albums. Or so he says.

He's like Piledriver. A gimmick that's gone on for too long.

Canada has a huge hard rock/metal history, but we also have a lot of laughable shit in this neck of the musical woods. Like Anvil. I am a fan and own the band's entire discography, but I also recognize the boys' material is largely unremarkable and dated as fuck. And Lips and Robb are pure comedy.

Speaking of Anvil, how difficult is it for someone with a clue to tell them to hire another guitarist (someone young and contemporary in approach, who can also write), a singer (Lips' vocals are retard personified. If he must, let him sing, say, half the stuff.) and a happening producer who can steer these clowns in a viable direction?

Canadian metal... is Annihilator still around?
Some of these bands are essentially one man shows. There is one guy with a vision of what the band should be (like Jeff Waters) and everyone else plays second fiddle.

... is Annihilator still around?

Indeed. It's my favourite band. Has been since the debut, Alice In Hell. It and Rush.

Annihilator released its newest, Suicide Society, several months ago. The singer, Dave, left, so this this one once again features Jeff Waters on vox. It's good, but as like its predecessor, the back half of the album is much better than the first. In my opinion, at least.

Jeff is unquestionably one of metal's greatest guitarists. His rhythm playing is freakish in precision and attack.

(I sorta know Jeff and a few years ago drove to Ottawa, Ontario, to watch the band rehearse before it split for the European festival season.)

What about Triumph?

Again, big fan. Although a lot of the material hasn't aged particularly well. Rik is an excellent musician, but strangely, I find his electric lead playing to be his least impressive skill on the instrument. Not that he's not good. He's exceptional, really, but he's never much advanced past the Page era, in his soloing. That's being a bit too dramatic, but you get my drift.

(In the '80s, I attended a softball game the Triumph boys played in a Toronto park against DJs from the radio station Q-107. I've also visited and toured Metal Works Studios, in Toronto, that began as a rehearsal warehouse for the band to jam and practice. Gil still owns it and it's become world famous.)

Truth.

People are not aware how important Rush is to the advancement of certain fundamental aspects of heavy metal. Its unquestionably the premier progressive metal band, the '70s material forming the basis for everything in this substyle that came after.

Don't forget Voivod.

Never could cop to the band's music, but I respect their influence and status as being one of Canada's first extreme metal groups. And now that Piggy's dead, they shouldn't continue, in my opinion.

(Funny story. Several years back I attended a Decapitated gig in Toronto, when Vitek and Martin were still alive/in the band. They had a Canadian tour manager, and every time I saw him, I was like, I KNOW that guy. But ... ?) Turns out it was Blacky, VoiVods original bassist.)

Man, what a crap tune. I remember this video playing on MuchMusic. (Those moves by Thor are epic, though.)
