Medical Supplement Cocktail
« on: March 12, 2006, 07:56:44 PM »

I recently attended an ADA (American Dietetic Association) conference last week, where they were showing the latest trends in medical nutrition.  There was one product that I had to laugh at.  The reason is because, these same pencil neck dorks that call all of us idiots and suckers for buying these potions and tonics and are getting ripped off, are now using supplements too. ;D ::)

I heard it put best this way, "science will always be two steps behind the athlete." ;D  Anyways, the company name is ROSS nutrition, they also manufacture the popular meal replacement "Ensure."  THeir newest product is called JUVEN, and is being used currently at General hospital USC, UCLA medical center, Loma Linda medical center...just in So Cal, to treat patients with wasting syndrome and burn patients.  Here's the ingredients

JUVEN:
7g L-Arginine
7g L-glutamine
1.2g HMB

HMB?! :o  Does anyone still take that?

Anyways, thought you guys might be interested to see the supplements currently used in hospital settings.
just not good enough

Seems like an appropriate target market (as a supplement)  "to treat patients with wasting syndrome and burn patients", doesn't it?  :-\  I know if I were a family member or friend of a patient in that situation, I'd want to try anything that showed promise.

What gives me the biggest kick is encountering the people who previously ridiculed you for using supplements, then a few years down the road, you run into each other, ...and you're looking, feeling and functioning waaaaay better than they are. They're always like "Wow, what's your secret?" LOL. Sometimes if I'm feeling particularly naughty, I might mention "We went to highschool together". LOL. When it gets really funny is when you're with a few potion, lotion, pill popping supplement users who you also went to highschool with. The look of shock on other people's faces is hilarious, ...especially when you and the other supp users were the seniors and the non supp users were the freshmen.  :P

There's another company that just completed successful clinical trials in nursing homes on a supplement designed to treat pressure ulcers aka bedsores. Personally I think they're better off having the elderly get up and move around before it came down to this, but hey... whatever helps I suppose.

I received my Bachelor's in Nutrition and the stance from most of the old schoolers is that the only supplement needed is a multi-vitamin.  The other thing was that no one needs more than 1 gram rule for protein intake.  Ironically, nutrition sciences in the Universities is lacking any depth in the use of supplements.

Wasn't HMB known to be somewhat effective at high contentrations?  1.2g sounds like a lot.

Back when Bill Phillips was pushing HMB like it was the next generation miracle pill, it was always recommended to be taken at a dosage of 3 grams per day.

This "juven" technology is the basis behind EAS's latest, horridly over-priced supplement: Muscle Armor.

No, I haven't tried it because like I said, it is RIDICULOUSLY priced!  On Netrition.com which usually has very good pricing, it'll run you $70.00 for 15 days worth!
