All This Retro Talk... Soloflex
« on: May 10, 2018, 07:32:31 PM »
My thread on the 1988 Mr. Olympia, Nether Animal's thread on hot 1980's chick, actress Jill Whitlow, well, it made me nostalgic.

Soloflex.

Yep. I had one when I turned fifteen years old. Money I saved from my first job, a 125 customer paper route.

It took almost two years to save. Back then, I had my brother's cement weight set and a cheap bench I got from Woolworth. That's right, Woolworth. :-[

One of my sisters worked there as a teen. I remember I got a discount on the bench. It was DP. Remember them? Diversified Products.

So I was desperate to get my Soloflex.

It was the infomercials that were on 24/7 back then. They sold me. I remember one summer that thing ran nonstop.

I loved it because it seemed so new, so futuristic. Yes, I feel like I got a lot out of it. However, within two years, I had joined a Gold's. It had just opened in my town. It set up shop right next to a small family grocer that sold a lot of locally sourced fruits and vegetables.

For a bit, I still used it. But it started getting its share of dust as time went on. Eventually, I put it in my parent's attic.

When I got my own place, an apartment then, I took it with me and started to use it again.

Once I bought my house, it went back out of sight. This time, my attic. I just went up and looked at it. I feel like I'm going to bring it down as I'm thinking of adding on to my home by putting in a home gym.

But it is amazing to go and see it. It literally brought back a flood of memories from my childhood.

=================

Anyone here ever own one or know someone who did?

Did you ever try it?

There were stories back then about the rubber weight bands drying out and tearing, but I've never had to replace mine. Back then, they use to say they would replace them for free, but I don't know about now.

I remember that. Remember its offshoot called Nordicflex Gold?

 Did the Soloflex work?

I felt like it did.

It definitely affected my attitude. I played with the cement weights, but I trained seriously with it for close to two years.

Yes, my first serious weight training was with a Soloflex.

I believe that it helped my build a body that benefited me in playing high school baseball and football.

I played basketball on my own, not on any team. I had a basketball hoop in my parent's driveway.

But yeah, I built a body that damn near most kids my age would have wanted.

LOL! :D

The three famous Soloflex infomercials are on YouTube.

There is even one with three-time Mr. Olympia Frank Zane. Yes, he was a spokesman for a time.

1. This was the first. The poor little kid who wanted to change his body.

2. The second. The guy playing football and the girl playing tennis.

3. The third. A guy, a girl... oh, and Frank Zane. :o

I had taped these onto videocassettes back in the day. I probably still have them. Hell, I still have two working VCRs. :)

Was cool concept and very slick ads...unfortunately the "resistance bands" were like any elastic rubber bands...they lose elasticity being stretched until the resistance is all fucked up...they'd get loose and before you know it you have no idea how much you are lifting or if you're even getting stronger....

Once the bands started wearing out, they provided less and less tension..so you're lifting more weight but not sure how much is strength and how much the rubber bands wearing out...But do remember...13 years old..great birthday gift....fond memory.

Oh God. Another trip down memory lane. Seems like this site stopped moving forward when most members started focusing on memories.

Back when you were 15, you were focused on the future. Now, that is what you really miss. But you are convinced that you miss an exercise machine.

You can’t be happy if you are always looking back.

I felt the same way about Nautilus machines. I use to read everything that Arthur Jones put out. I felt if I could only train on 12 Nautilus magic machines I would be buff. When I got to college the school had 12 pristine Nautilus machines and I trained hard on them. Some were outstanding like the pullover and some were just okay like the tricep machine.

I also wanted to try a Soloflex back in the day. Never had the opportunity. The problem with rubber band resistance is that the load is too low at the beginning of the rep. Still that strength curve works for some exercises. Have you seen the price of these things today? $2600 for the machine and the accessories. No thanks. You can spend that money more wisely on IronMaster dumbbells and a super bench with accessories.

You ain't kidding. :o

https://soloflex.com/

The prices are nuts.

They don't really advertise anymore. Bowflex ads are still around. They've really changed that machine over the years.

So I wonder what kind of overhead he's sitting on?

He's an old guy now.

Drop those prices, empty those warehouses and retire. :P

Edit: I notice that they don't make the Rockit anymore, just the accessories. Now that was a stupid machine.

They brought back the original Soloflex with the wooden bench sans leg extension and butterfly attachment. Almost two grand. Yikes!

An Isometric gimmick thing that had exercises for each body part. I had one when I was 13 years old. I bought into the hype behind it. Just like I bought into the hype about supplements.
