I used to get the runners high when playing rugby, first 10 minutes of the game I tended to gas after a sprint but after that its like your body is a machine.
Even in training we ran 2 miles to the training ground and I only really got going once I got there, running back when everyone else was gassed I used to almost sprint the 2 miles back uphill.
yeah, i think i never experienced it when i was younger because it only kicks in after a while, once you get relaxed... and even then, not always.
today i had a pretty good workout, reminded me of this thread. i was getting depressed as i thought the grimy, dungeon like gym attached to my office, so i decided to skip it at first, and instead ran to a nearby park with some pullup and dipping bars. sometimes just a change of setting can seemingly have a huge effect... i remember one time, visiting my hometown, my usual gym had closed early due to a holiday or something. i drove across town to a golds, the only gym still open. i remember clearly, at that time i hadn't had a good workout in quite a while, and i was expecting just another lacklustre session. i felt dead, as usual, and just wanted to get in and out and "do my duty".
to my surprise, i was on fire from the start. i'll never forget the insane calf pump and burn i got doing pellius' "dictionary calf raise routine", lol. ordinarily that routine just burned a bit and hurt my achilles, but that day i got a pump so intense, every rep took my breath away -- the kind of set where you're just kind of in a trance, staring into space unable to believe the sensations, half expecting the muscle to just explode. i have no idea what caused this, i only remember this strange suspicion that it was simply the new gym itself, as impossible as that seems.
