Gibson is a passionate man. I think he's a bad drunk in that he's a mean drunk but he's passionate about his causes. There's an old interview back in the day where he's pretty switched on about the economy in Australia being sold off to the Chinese -

Those phone calls he did when clearly drunk and ragingly upset don't do him justice. He's a smart fucker.

Gibson's worldview came entirely from his dad, who made it to 101 incidentally

Interesting guy Mel - lot of rage in him, but talented: got into NIDA first go (not an easy feat), decent genetics too (stocky mesomorph type, thick joints)

Unfortunately had a problem with alcohol even early on in his career.

In 'The Bounty' (1984), according to his co-star Hopkins he was mostly drunk on set which he noted was unfortunate considering his acting talents.

Would have probably looked a lot younger today without all the decades of booze.
