lets go!

i saw the other thread and it sparked my interest. i assume many bbers must have it from being so big?

what can a younger guy do to keep an eye on this from becoming an issue? does being a mouth breather at night add to this issue?

90% of the time it's caused by obesity. Stay lean and don't become a fat fuck.

being a mouth breather

Doc gave me some cortisone thing to squirt up my nose.  Said I had swoled up altoids or something.  Haven't used it.

I've had it since about 2001. Gets worse when I get heavier, along with snoring. My ex pointed it out at first. Woke up one night back in about 03 when I was at my heaviest bodyweight about 242-245 with her giving me mouth to mouth lol.. Thought she was kissing me the felt a huge bubble of air pushing into my throat and cheeks. Tried to breath & felt like I was choking and realized she was pinching my nose then shook my head. I asked What the heck she was doing and says she thought I was havi g a heart attack and dead. Was confused at first since it was like 3am then i kinda laughed and she started slapping/hitting my chest saying its not funny.. Then she started crying and I felt bad. Lol... Said I was snoring, then I'd stop then gasp for air, then stop, then snore like normal, then stop, then gasp for air.. And so on (she was awake feeding out baby at the time, son I guess it must be been early 04 actually).. 3rd time I stopped she said it was for like 30seconds and thats when she freaked out and tried shaking me then gave mouth to mouth. Takes me forever to fall asleep, but once I'm asleep I'm dead asleep. That happened semi-often after that until I went down below 220.. Them again when over 230. Didn't find out it was sleep apnea till well after. Actualy had no idea what sleep apnea was for a while. Had it again in prison when in went above 230 but they wouldn't do a sleep study and would just give you a cpap machine and then ones they had in there were loud as fuck and there's no way I was gonna use one in there and bother other people. Since getting out i still have it when I'm over 225 but I've only had 3 live-in gfs since so nobody's arpund to mention it to me or remind me to get the sleep study done and get the machine. I'm aware I have it now because it actually wakes me up occasionaly, and I'm rarelynwake up "rested"... I mean really rarely. I can't recal the last time I had a "normal" nights sleep and an "ok" morning and not tired all day, yet hard as he'll to fall asleep at night even with 3-4 benadryl (i don't use any benzos or drink any more).

It's caused by things like stress, high BMI, high neck circumference and bad breathing habits.

Manage the things above.

That's often a by-product of apnea. It may sound radical, but try sleeping with tape on your mouth.

  • Does your own snoring wake you up?...
  • Do you wake up and hear the tail end of your snoring echoing off the ceiling? (I mean this literally)...
  • Do you have childhood memories of hearing your dad stop breathing while he slept?...
  • Do you fall asleep at traffic lights?...
  • Do you have chronic fatigue?...
  • Do you wake up sharply with your heart racing?...
  • Do you sharply wake up and you have to piss? (Some mistake this for prostate)...
  • Do you have dental malocclusions?(There is a correlation between  needing orthodontics and malformed upper respiratory passages)...

If so...the next step is a sleep study where they watch you sleep and wire you up for EKG, EEG, and blood oxygen...
Mouthpieces are for the most part ineffective...
If a Cpap is indicated, next is to determine the pressure  required to keep your air passages open nocturnally...pressure is measured in Centimeters of Water...Some Cpap machines are "self titrating" in that they can figure out when the patient is struggling for breath and turns the pressure up to open the air passage...
It may be that you still might need some surgery to reduce the pressure necessary...I had to have my tonsils out, deviated septum fixed, and uvula shaved down.

I answer yes to all those except the dental one and the echoing ceiling one lol.

For while there id fall asleep on the freeway heading home between clients at 930am and fall asleep at the stoplights at freeway offrsamps... Even fall asleep between clients while laying on the ab-bench at the gym... Couple times slept there for 2hrs on acvident.

It fucking sucks, not sure if mine is actual sleep apnea or just a side effect of not being able to breath adequately through my nose, but it starts literally the second I fall asleep if lying on back.
Do you still dream when having sleep apnea? As far as I know dreams only occur during deep sleep so if someone still dreams do they not have sleep apnea??

I'm still able to dream with apnea (maybe not everyone?), but the deep REM phases are shorter.

Thanks for anwering that for me as I wondered it for a while, I was hoping the fact I dream very vividly meant I didn't actually have apnea.

There are 2 ways to find out yourself if you possible have apnea: extensive snoring and feeling tired/sleep drunk (almost) every morning after 7-8 hours of sleep.

For me I was falling asleep while driving, extremely tired all the time, would wake up choking, and would basically throw up in my mouth while sleeping, and my bp and hematocrit were high.   Until my sleep study I had no idea the severity of it.  They only let me sleep 3 hours and woke me up to put a mask on.  I thought I slept great, but I stopped breathing 240 times and for 58 seconds at one point.  Weight reduction can help, but I have central sleep apnea as well, which is where the brain stops sending signals to breathe.  I have an auto set cpap which detects the apnea, what kind it is, then delivers the amount of pressure I need to keep my airway open.  Sleep apnea is no joke.  Main cause of atrial fibrillation, increases risk for stroke, heart attack, etc.  Only way to find out if you have it is by a sleep study.

I snore like a fucker but what confuses the doctors is that I'm a stomach sleeper. They claim it's not possible to snore while sleeping on your stomach face down. I do.  So a cpap won't help since I'm not s back sleeper.

Unreal, from your stories it really doesn't sound all that bad, food wise you said you ate well, you were able to stay on test, and even offered a CPAP, unreal.
