Hate to bust your bubble but Growth Hormone was being used in the 1970's. Guys throughout the 80's were using more and more of HGH with Steroids. Insulin was even being used in the 1980's to a certain extent but guys didn't fully understand how to use it.
Late 1980's Growth hormone dosages started to increase and then someone got really smart with the fast acting insulin.
Saying they didn't used Growth in the 1980's is like kids today wondering if the Rock takes steroids. I think everyone forgets what Duchaine said, "its not a magic pill but escalating dosages."
STAY POSITIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sure, but it was still tightly controlled, and the cost in 1982 for cadaver Crescormin was $10,000 a year in 1982 (around $29,000 a year in 2017 dollars) for a relatively light course of it by bodybuilding standards. Genetech didn't develop a synthetic till 85 with Protropin, which in ran $15,000 - 20,000 (about $36,000 on the low end adjusted for inflation) for a similar light dosage course. So that slowed its use considerably. Indeed, Duchaine, himself, lamented on the old Misc.Fitness.Weights that the first heavy usage of GH that he saw was Lyle Alzado back in the late 80's because he had the money and connections to cover it.
It just didn't lend itself to the levels of abuse we see today because of cost and availability.
Same with insulin, it took a while for everyone to figure it out.
Since most folks seem to be lamenting the classic physiques of the 70's - early 90's, you'd need to go back to a classic drug stack which for the most part was standard AAS, not much more, not much less.
