Glovers character, Murtaugh. ....was turning 50 in the first movie. That was 1986-87. So now...he would be an 80 year old detective???LMFAO
They had a film written by Shane Black, the guy that wrote the first two, and is pretty good with that 80's comedy - action type stuff. He can also write dark, he wanted to kill Gibson in LW 2. They were trying to get Gibson interested for years, but he wasn't. Perhaps he sees it now as a good way to really cement himself in Hollywood again. The Black script was going to look something like -
“I wrote a 62-page treatment with my friend Chuck for “Lethal Weapon 5” that would’ve been, I think, a very good movie. It was interesting. It was essentially an older Riggs and Murtagh in New York City during the worst blizzard in east coast history, fighting a team of expert Blackwater guys from Afghanistan that’s smuggling antiquities. And we had a young character that actually counter-pointed them. But I didn’t wanna do what people do when they’re trying to transition which is, they sorta put the two older guys in the movie, but really it’s about their son! And he’s gonna take over and we’re gonna do a spinoff. Fuck that, if they’re gonna be in the movie, they’re gonna be in the movie — I don’t care how old they are.”
The scuttlebutt now is that it might indeed be a mentor type film. It's probably best they let the franchise end. They could've done it 10-12 years ago, but now all of them are long in the tooth. Gibson might be able to shave a few years lookswise, but Glover is in his early 70's in real life, and the character would indeed be 80 plus years old by the time the film comes out. Murtugh's son would be late 40's at least. Riggs would be 70 ish. Riggs's son would be late 20's.
Looking at their schedules, 2020 is probably the earliest we'd see anything.
