Why are you making an assumption that he is getting married? In the US “fiancé” has two meanings. One is the traditional meaning, and second just basically means gf/bf, but wanting it to mean the traditional way. A clue to which he is referring to is a mention of a wedding date. Unless they talking about a date that is set, then it’s the “play” or “fake” fiancé meaning.

3) Guys from non-White communities where marriage is part of their culture.
4) Two weirdos who aren't a perfect fit and for some reason the woman doesn't get bored of it or find someone better or richer so they kind of settle for each other. This is 90% of who we see in the parking lot of Costco or Walmart, the balding, fat-bellied man in plaid shorts, sandals, a too-short golf shirt that doesn't cover his waistband overhang and the ugly wife with several kids in a stroller (or grown).

The main reason for getting married is and always has been (although women will never admit to it): to secure financial assets between both parties. If you have children it is even more so. But the reality is most people end up screwing over the other party if the relationship dooesn't work out so why bother anymore?

It was the main reason 60 years ago. Women with jobs don't need men for money anymore, which isn't to say they don't use them for it. But it's not a survival mechanism as much as a convenience one, and since most guys can be replaced, these women never learn to value a relationship or compromise to make it work because they don't need to thanks to their phones.

I always like a long term engagement couple almost as much as the couple that is quickly engaged, dates 9 and then breaks it off because the other half was nuts.

Must be a regional thing. I've never heard the term fiance used in any other way than to mean you are planning to marry the person. At least I've never heard it used that way while living in Phoenix, Charlotte or Syracuse, NY.

Solid insight here.  I also think that a lot of BB'ers forget (intentionally sometimes) that the body is more temporary than the mind, which is eternal.  I'm not saying people have to deteriorate as they age, but nobody will be improving their body past their youthful best at 70/80 whereas we can all improve our minds for our whole lives (health permitting)
