Flex Lewis WILL be back as Men’s Open Bodybuilder

For the six consecutive years, Flex Lewis proved that he is the best 212 bodybuilder out there. He has been able to maintain the attributes that made him a champion and has even continued to make improvements to his physique. The reigning 212 champion recently announced that 2018 Mr. Olympia will be his last Men’s 212 competition.

But according to Flex’s coach Neil Hill, after Flex retires from 212 he will be back on the bodybuilding stage possibly in 2020 as a men’s open bodybuilding competitor. Neil posted on his Instagram shortly after Flex Lewis announced on his Instagram that he was retiring from the 212 division. On his post coach Neil “Yoda” Hill says:

“So 2018 will be Flex Lewis last year competing as a 212lb Athlete. He’s defended that tile from day one where he became the first ever 212lb @mrolympiallc . He’s endlessly traveled the world competing in different 212lb shows, and he’s also traveled the world relentlessly giving back to All the Fans, Athletes, Promotors and sport as a whole.

Yes this will be his last 212lb outing come September in Las Vegas, but he WILL be back at some point as a New reformed Open class bodybuilder at some point. maybe 2020, but whenever it maybe you will see a new level of quality size and muscle that will allow him to finally be competitive in the open class division.

Evolution is what life is about…”

Can't wait to see him in the open class. He will make a lot of the current bloated champs look bad.

He is making the wrong choice,  he will be best Top 10 maybe 7,8 or 9 if he refines the extra weight he will have on his frame.  Should have just called it after this year and focused on coming off the drugs, downsizing and working in his business ventures.  He will be placing a lot of unnecessary stress on his body to compete at 240+

I agree. He will never win any big $ in the open shows. IF he continues to compete he should stay at 212 and continue to collect checks.

I don't think he should play the size game. He should come in around 225lbs and let the quality place him high. He can't out mass guys but he can out quality them.

As if 225 isn't playing the size game lol. What he's done now is playing the size game. He's been doing it all along.

This news broke on CNN earlier this morning and there were problems as a result.

CNN was covering the trapped soccer team rescue and broke in with the Lewis story.  The CNN reporters, along with the on the scene reporters were so taken by Flex's decision, they dropped their headphones and discussed the possible ramifications to the bodybuilding world.

Meanwhile, a former Thai Navy Seal was trying in vain to communicate for assistance with his contacts.  His attempts to reach them fell on ears that only were hungering for Lewis news.  The Seal never got the help he needed :(

As a result, the former Seal drowned.  I'm sure he doesn't mind being a footnote in the famous Flex Lewis 2018 story.  Who wouldn't?

I thought he was retiring because of his depression. That's what he said.

Maybe his coach wants to keep making money from Flex's reputation and fears it will drop if Flex is retired.

I knew he wasn't done. These guys don't leave until they drop dead or walk with a cane and have 10 broken screws in their backs. Mental disorder of peace. The guy is at his peak, why not step down now while he's on top and do other fitness-related things instead? Instead he wants to get bigger, like they all do.

Great post.  In fact - great thread here, on that note.

I agree, Kwon3.  Flex was either born in 1984 or 1985 [I think 1984], making him either 33 or 34 right now.  That would be a great time to retire and focus on ventures with supplement companies, riding on the coattails of his previous success.  Flex is 5'5.5", right?  Even 212-lb of hard muscle at that height is massive, let alone 225-lb or more.

It's sad that when bodybuilders retire, everyone can tell.  When I get a great upper body pump, I look radically different in as little as an hour after my workout.  I would say I look a little different even 15 minutes after my workout.  So pro bodybuilders, whose physiques are propped up with a fair amount of performance-enhancing chemicals, experience this sort of disappointment at a far greater level.

Is there really so little money in bodybuilding that Flex has to do this?  As a multi-winning 212-lb Mr. Olympia champion, wasn't Flex making at least $200,000 each year?  If not over $500,000?  In all these years, did he not think to bank that money to get some businesses running in Wales so that he could retire at a comfortable age [35 or 40], and focus on slimming down and being healthy for the second half of his life?  I worry that doing it this way - competing in the open class - he may not have much of a second half of his life to focus on.  :-\

He said himself that he wants to focus on his health. And 2 seconds later that hes gonna do the open class?

Moving up to 240 is definitly not the best choice he can do from a healthpoint. But as a fan it will be great to see what changes he can make.

I hope he doesnt get a bubblegut in the process though.

His financial health would appear good as he has a gym he owns and is joint owner of Sinister Labs with their BB related protein cookies etc. I think he is one of the few bodybuilders who does have a mind for business so going up to the open class is for pure vanity reasons as it is unnecessary for money reasons.

Yes, it was.  I reported the results of this news a few posts up.   Try and stay current bro.  See below:
