Truth is, this generation of youth is emptier than any other previous generation. Its totally exhausted of anything original. They walk around with Nirvana and Tupac shirts. More know more of the words to Zeppelin or Pantera than whatever non offensive pretty boy crap that passes as rock today. Part of growing up used to be sneaking out of the house to underground raves. Now kids have a literal satellite tracking device their parents can monitor. And anything even slightly original or unique is viral on youtube so its played out and exhausted within weeks. In the 70s, tattoos used to stand for being counter culture and unique. In the post modernist, New York punk movement of the 70s, one could get arrested for giving a tattoo. Now every 16 year old girl goes to the mall on her birthday to get her obligatory butterfly tattoo. We get it honey. You're going to spread your wings and fly. Brilliant, original metaphor. So unique. But you're going to fly into a brain dead, exhausted, depressed, apathetic bullshit culture owned by corporate media. You cannot escape anymore. The kids go to their favorite concert now and rather than mosh, fuck each other in the back rooms and get wasted they sit there recording it with their fucking phone. Even show it to their parents, who probably paid for the concert with their extra credit card bonus points. Even being a weirdo or a nerd has been swallowed up by the Matrix. I saw what would back in my day be called nerds, and they were at a high end thrift shop in Santa Monica on Main St buying really pricey classic nerd gear. One douche teen on his high priced phone yelled to the others, "Dude. I found an original 1980 Atari shirt". They look in awe at the 60's, or any former time when there was something to stand for and they simply can't find anything. So they stand for nothing. They stand for political correctness. Let's not hurt anyone's feelings. Let's go around finding how many things are too exreme, racist, sexist or offensive. Wasn't that the fun of being a teen? Doing the shit that was offensive and pissed people off as a form of self exploration and discovery?
It's over for them. Depression is at an all time high with the youth. They are trapped and cannot escape. It's over Johnny. It's over.
