What could go wrong?

I mean, the guy sounds like an upstanding citizen.
As part of his criminal enterprise, Henderson, who purportedly served in the US Army, also allegedly destroyed documents and made false entries in the bank’s books to cover up the theft, the indictment states.
Clearly, he wasn't a complete idiot, as he was able to "cook" the books (shame on you Wells Fargo for not having tighter measures in place so that a clown of this pedigree couldn't have taken you for a ride). I just don't understand why he thought that he could keep this up without ultimately getting caught. Surprisingly, he didn't think about the possible consequence of advertising his newfound wealth on social media.
I don't know what drove him to steal in the first place, short of him just being a fucking thief. What I do wonder is how much of this was driven by his need to keep up with the social media Joneses. That issue is becoming a big fucking deal and I think apps/sites like Instagram do much more of a disservice than they do good. Don't get me wrong, I know many people that use it as a means of marketing for their businesses and for self-promotion purposes with the goal of making money, but it creates an environment where jealousy and hatred can thrive. This wealthy young man could have made something out of himself. Surely, he had an interest in accounting practices and could have climbed the latter into possibly becoming a bank teller or loan officer. Instead, he popped his cherry and will now go to prison.
Did society fail him? Did we create this monster by being the consumer-driven society we are?
