The black comedians that played the chitlin circuit, and the ones that play ghetto clubs now are probably the most brutal in the US. It's expected and respected in the culture, so they learn the ropes fast. If you watch the old HBO Def Jam comedy hours from the early to mid 90's, you see a light version.

That being sad, most of the guys that had long runs playing bars and small clubs before they got famous are pretty good roasters even thought you may not know it unless they are mad at the audience.

What's a chitlin circuit?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chitlin_Circuit .

More modernly, it'll be a series of small clubs in bad neighborhoods that cater to a rough crowd. You also get stuff like a comedy club that is also a strip club. You'll also hear tales of comedians being paid in some combo of cash/drugs/pussy, etc... if the comedian is willing. It might sound horrible, those types of clubs are great fun.

Ha, I suppose it could happen. It was mostly a reference  to those clubs being mainly black, and down in the southern part of the US. Chitlins were a tremendously popular food with black folks for many years, but that's died down somewhat. A lot of younger guys don't mess with pork or any of the old "soul" foods.
