The inconveniences that Sami al Haddad went through are perhaps over
A few days ago, we were the only Czech website to inform you that the top Bahraini professional bodybuilder Sami al Haddad was detained by the Qatari Coast Guard at the end of last week. Since then, he and other people he was fishing with in the Persian Gulf have been held involuntarily in Doha. The Bahraini Ministry of Foreign Affairs was of the opinion that Haddad was on an innocent fishing trip in Bahrain's territorial waters, in which case, of course, there would be no reason to detain him. Behind the scenes, however, there was speculation that GPS navigation might have betrayed Sami, and he could have deviated from the right course and left Bahrain's territorial waters.
Last night , the GDNonline news website, GDNonline.com , published a favorable report for Sami's fans. According to his relatives in the Bahraini capital Manama, the Qatari authorities have approved Sami's release. This morning, the same source brought more details. The 47-year-old participant in the five-year Olympia 212 Showdown, along with other people, was actually released by the Qatari authorities. They were all flown to Oman, from where they should reach Bahrain today, where their families and friends are already preparing a warm welcome for them.
The fishermen were released following intense diplomatic efforts by Bahraini institutions, and men returning home include Habib Abbas, a father of seven who has been imprisoned for more than two months.
Bahraini Interior Minister Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa recently said that Qatar has detained around 650 Bahraini fishing boats with more than 2,150 men on board in the last 10 years. He hopes that the current release of Bahraini fishermen will help calm the turbulent situation in the waters of the Persian Gulf. King Hamad ibn Isa Al Khalifa, Bahrain, has reportedly expressed his support for greater unity in the Gulf Cooperation Council.
