I lived in SE Texas for 40 years, this shit happens every 10 years or so. I remember in the late 80's it got down to 6 degrees and snowed for a week.

I have family in Austin and Houston still, it wasn't that bad. Most people lost power due to tree branches falling down and shit. In West Austin where my brother lives, it got down to 9 degrees and snowed about 3".

are you Wes' age???

He's right. It has nothing to do with policy. This is what happens when multiple things go bad at the same time. Nobody could have seen this coming.

ordered utilities to impose temporary blackouts for the first time in 19 years last Friday and did so again Saturday, pulling the plug on hundreds of thousands of customers for one to two hours

Some quickly looked into doing that but found the actual changeover of service wouldn’t happen for days.

Now customers say they never dreamed they’d be billed in the four figures for five days of service.

Karen Cosby said her cost is $5,000 for usage since Saturday at her 2,700-square-foot house in Rockwall.

DeAndre Upshaw of Dallas said the electric bill for his 900-square-foot, two-story townhouse was also $5,000.

haha some tard a couple weeks ago was saying people who cant handle cold are pussies and I couldnt live in Texas heat. These clowns get a dusting of snow and a couple days of cold and they are crying to the feds for handouts? Ahahahhaha. This winter we went through 2 week stretches of minus 30 or lower and there was an over 2 day run of not having power in those temps. We didnt piss or moan, we just sucked it up, slept in our parkas and waited for power to fix all the downed lines. Holy Texans are soft

You’re a moron.

Texas houses and houses built in the South are much different than homes in the North. Majority of houses in Texas rely solely on electric heat, no basements, rare insulated pipes, no snowplow trucks, etc.

Not to mention building specifications are different for structures since there is not prolonged anticipation of snow accumulation on a roof.

Yeah. This was a once in a hundred year occurrence if that. We went 30 degrees beyond historic lows in some places in the South.  Truckers spending the night on highways because we don’t have snow plows in most of Texas or winter tires.

We had two mild winters and now we have a cold one. Everyone is saying the world is ending. I remember George Washington saying something about the freezing weather and snow when he crossed the Delaware to kill the British. Five hundred years ago we had bad winters, hot summers, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, tsunamis, drought, and volcanoes.  No, this is not new.

Exactly, i still find it funny how people are making this political. If they knew it was going to be this bad they couldn't even have prepared for it, the Texas infrastructure is not built to withstand this type of weather. You factor in that several failures occurred for the first time in history and this happens.

This is like Katrina hitting New Orleans and they blamed the dams that failed. Those dams were never designed to handle that type of weather in the first place and you cannot engineer for the unknown and catastrophic events.
