How is it an ambush attack? The cops are the armed strangers who pulled him over you can argue it is their job but their harassment with guns is what started the incident. Dude didn't sneak up on them minding their own business in their car and start shooting them they came to his car with guns. You can't roll up on someone with guns detain them barking out commands and orders then claim they ambushed you

The guy wasn't lying in wait for them in the bushes he didn't plan and wait and ambush them from a concealed position.
