The year he entered the O, Muscle & Fitness had a big article on him where he said he was taking the title away from Haney. I waited in anticipation thinking he may win and be the new champ. I saw the placings only in another mag and couldn't understand how he could finish so low when he looked better than Haney in all those front shots in the M & F article. When the new M & F came and I saw the photos I could see his back is what did him in. A lot of guys looked great from the front but Arnold, Sergio, Haney, Yates, etc, all had great backs which separated them from the pack.
Yet you also had guys who won the Olympia, who didn't have great backs: Scott, Zane, Dickerson, Rhoden.
When I speak of the mass-monster version of Strydom, I'm referring this WBF form, not his 1988 Olympia appearance. In fact, I had a thread years ago comparing both Haney and Strydom in 1991 after they won the Olympia and WBF championship, respectively.
http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=522629.0That would have been a sight to behold, had they gone head up then. That's why when people talk about mass monsters of the 90s, I believe Strydom is right up there with them.
