For all the talk about mass monsters, particularly from the 90s, Strydom rarely gets mentioned. I don't see why. He was enormous!!!
Until he turned around.

Until he turned around.

So what? His back was his weaker body part. But, overall, the man had fantastic size and shape.

Mike Christian had a wide back; but his legs were weak in comparison, same go for Pearson and M. Quinn.

Gary Strydex was known to have done some cock work on the side.  Now he's got Jesus.  Fuck him that cunt!

I'm just saying that it was why he didn't win the Olympia.

I'm just saying that it was why he didn't win the Olympia.

He only entered it once and he was nowhere near the size he was in the WBF. Even then, he placed 5th.

The aforementioned bodybuilders from the previous post had wide backs but didn't win the Olympia, either.

Olympia or not, Strydom was still a bona fide mass monster in the early 90s. I think he looked even better in 2006 than he did during his WBF days. But, the other competitors had caught up with him size-wise.

The year he entered the O, Muscle & Fitness had a big article on him where he said he was taking the title away from Haney. I waited in anticipation thinking he may win and be the new champ. I saw the placings only in another mag and couldn't understand how he could finish so low when he looked better than Haney in all those front shots in the M & F article. When the new M & F came and I saw the photos I could see his back is what did him in. A lot of guys looked great from the front but Arnold, Sergio, Haney, Yates, etc, all had great backs which separated them from the pack.

Yet you also had guys who won the Olympia, who didn't have great backs: Scott, Zane, Dickerson, Rhoden.

When I speak of the mass-monster version of Strydom, I'm referring this WBF form, not his 1988 Olympia appearance. In fact, I had a thread years ago comparing both Haney and Strydom in 1991 after they won the Olympia and WBF championship, respectively.

That would have been a sight to behold, had they gone head up then. That's why when people talk about mass monsters of the 90s, I believe Strydom is right up there with them.

Jim Quinn had that vascular freak factor going on.  He could have made a dent in the sport if he stuck around.

Hence, he was known as "The Future". Here is he, on BodyStars (10:18)

1991 WBF Championship:

1992 WBF Championship:

Here's the episode that aired mere hours before the 1992 (and final) WBF championship. I'm watching it now, as I didn't get to record it. I had some errands to run back in the day, before heading to my friend's house and paying his father $15 to have him order the show.

Man, I wish Lex Luger had been able to appear at the show. If he looked anything like the way he did on BodyStars, heck, he could have cracked the top 5 that year.
