Oh, and I prefer Pandora where I can hand pick what music I listen to while driving those 2 miles to the store. Have you ever listened to Kurt Elling,  Nina Simone, or Chris Botti? NPR would put me to sleep. Sleeping at the wheel is not a good thing.

We kept that car for over 16 years, before we gave it to our daughter when she got her driver’s license in 1991. Eventually she and her husband traded it in for a Ford which they regretted. A couple of years ago, they bought a 2019 Beetle because she missed the old one that we gave her, and this was the last chance to get one. 

I replaced the very unreliable and expensive to maintain, 1983 Peugeot 505 STI with a 1994 VW Jetta. Our good friend Nancy liked to tell us people who drove Jettas had Jetta-tude. I countered with Subaru owners being Subarudes which they are. They are almost worse than the folks driving Tesla's which have proliferated in my neighborhood.

The old bugs were better than the new ones, built like a tractor...you could actually work on them and parts weren't so high. They rusted horribly on salted roads though.

Seems like the new VW stuff gets 100k miles and start falling apart....and the resale is horrid. Of course, I'm in the midwest so import cars are less common and people that specialize in work on them are downright predatory.

My mom had a new '72 Orange Super Beetle named Charlie. I'd like to think it was a play on Charlie Chaplin and Hitler's moustache but I doubt she was that witty.
