Whatchoo prefer? (Smith machine)
« on: July 17, 2023, 10:47:10 AM »
Since nobody on here uses a Smith Machine - or even works out for that matter - if you *did* use a Smith Machine what do you prefer?  The straight up and down kind or the kind with the slight angle to the track.

I never found the one with the angle to be comfortable in any exercise.

I really like the Smith that is on a track at the bottom so you can get a pretty free range of movement on any exercise with the safety factor involved.  But not many gyms have this around.

There's actually a growing amount of people touting the smith machine for hypertrophy by doing all those constant tension type pump sets.

I separated my shoulder in college on one, so I'm not an advocate, but I do kind of see the point.

If Walmart made one you'd be first in line.

Maybe if it was on sale...

I like the straight up/down.
I never used them too much in the past, as I age and get injured a bit more lately, Ive been using them.

I like the straight up and down one. The only thing I use it for is standing calf raises.

Years ago I loved the smith for shoulder press and incline press. Not so much anymore.

For chest I like the angled Smith. For legs, back, and shoulders I like the completely vertical Smith

When I'm at a gym that doesn't have a decline bench but has those ab benches I set them under the vertical smith to do declines.

Prefer hammer or free weight. I don't like a fixed range of motion. I saw a guy tear both quads squatting on a smith.

It's not the size of your Smith Machine that counts, it's how you use it.

Was it due to the mechanics of the machine itself or something else?

Probably a combo of stupidity and being locked on a linear plane.

I read that bench to the base of the neck worked the upper pecs, as I was all broscience at the time.  At the bottom of rep 8 with two plates, my ac joint suffered a 1st/2nd degree separation.

Being broke at the time since I had just graduated, I was told I had a pec tear by a chiropractor who lifted at my gym, who generously sold me calcium supplements to correct it.  I didn't lift for 6 months, then went to a doc and got clear, and spent 50 bucks on the weight gain supplement with the word 900 in it, and started my path to perma bulking and getting very strong and having a gut.
