Gavin Newsom signs California law doubling taxes on guns, ammo: 'A small price to pay'

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law Tuesday that will double the taxes on guns and ammunition, with the new revenue going to safety initiatives.

The federal government collects excise taxes on purchases of firearms and ammunition at either 10% or 11%. The new law adds another 11% excise tax, meaning that Golden State residents can indirectly pay as much as 22%.

Newsom said that he saw the tax increase as a "pretty modest investment" in gun violence prevention and believes it will help toward "reducing those costs ultimately."

This bill helps no one. What it does is make it harder for law abiding citizens that are less fortunate to purchase a firearm and/or ammunition that are needed to protect themselves and families that live in dangerous neighborhoods where crime is highest. Zero common sense. The most anti 2A state in the union and is 100% unconstitutional.

It’ll be overturned on appeal

Will do nothing, I'd bet most of the guns used in California are stolen or run in from other states, and criminals don't pay excise taxes. It's a feel good money grab.

True, but like I said, this only hurts law abiding citizens and not the criminals. Remember this is the guy who released 78,000 criminals into the state from prisons

Coach,
Will you cross state lines to buy ammo?

I see it coming. Some blue states are keeping stats on what calibers are used in homicides. I see the 9MM being outlawed in some blue states. Some blue states are looking into having only smart guns being legal to sell.
