I clearly remember an article in MD where he said he trained quads every other week, he did "just" TWO sets of 50 with 405. Said he lowered his reps through the year until he did a max single. Then he rode on a bicycle for a couple of weeks, "that's when the quads came out."
In that article he said he was now clean and said he used vanadyl sulphate, "it gave me the same type of skin texture as roids, not quite, but close." AFAIK he didn't sell it and it was used by a lot of people, even pros who weren't clean, like Titus. Now it's nowhere to be seen. Platz also said he used "ox bile" with fatty meals. It's kind of like taking TUDCA today, which does do something. Bostin Loyd said he was adviced by an old-school pro to use ox bile, it would help when using orals and it's plausible at least.
I used to think Platz was cool. Now I mostly think he is a clown. You can see he is acting during his monologues, just rehearsed shit. Comes across as fake. And anyone training like him would be thrown out of most gyms, but Platz had the thighs, and
the rest of the credentials.
And he's all over the place with his gear dosages, one time he says he did 200mg of Deca a week, and another he said 1400mg of Deca (200mg per day). He sure had the cheeks of 1400mg LOL.
Not a chance in blue hell he ever did 50 with 405.
He told me his best at 600-plus was 635 for 12 several weeks before the (I think) 1985 Olympia.
Back when we spoke semi-frequently I would press him on tales of his squatting prowess. As clear as if five minutes ago I recall him looking me square in the eye and saying he’d done 51 with 315. And for one set. He then exclaimed he was toast after this feat.
He also told me, at his biggest and strongest (mid-Eighties), on an average day, he could manage a set of 10 with 600 (I would imagine he meant, specifically, 585, or six plates/wheels).
In these later years I have noticed Tom becoming a bit too scripted and presenting of a character rather than being “real”.
Concerning drug usage, who knows. I never discussed this with him. But like most retired pros, I would wager he isn’t entirely truthful with what and how much.
