Gladiator 2
« on: June 08, 2025, 03:55:28 PM »
What a fucking shit show.  I watched this bag of shit on the plane and it was so fucking awful.  Recycled themes and flashbacks to the first one just fell flat this time around.  The two twins looked inbred.  Denzel just mailed in his performance this time.

Would not recommend.

Yes. It was fucking horrible I hated that piece of shit. Not sure who greenlit that thing but obviously someone who wanted a nostalgic cash grab.

I started watching it and quickly determined it sucked.

The first one was awesome.

Just got off flying to Aruba and back you can’t go wrong with watching the HBO shows watched the Sopranos for thousand times   The episodes and curb your enthusiasm as well. One movie I did watch was the Led Zeppelin movie that just came out based on the first two albums and tours pretty cool

I think the Sopranos and Curb are the two best shows in television history.  Sopranos is the best non comedy and Curb is the best comedy.  I can watch either of them over and over.  Have you watched The Deuce?

He should have retired after the Martian. Or at least take more than 1-2 years between movies. Cranking them out like an assembly line, he definitely makes money for his investors, but the finished product is mid at best.

I couldn't finish watching it. Divided into three sittings and couldn't get myself to go through the last bit.

Historically, it's complete fantasy. Invading Numidia in 211 AD? That happened 250 years earlier when Rome was still a Republic and they defeated Carthage.

If it was a good film I could have looked past that, but the 'main character' has no presence or charisma, the characters are uninteresting, lots of obvious CGI and the even the cinematography is flat and boring.

Full confession.  I have never watched an episode of either of those.

I’m probably in the Getbig minority. I also watched it on a plane expecting the worst. It exceeded my expectations in a positive way. And Gladiator is probably in my top 10 of all-time favorites, so I automatically hated an idea of a sequel. I give it a 6.5/10 and won’t be rewatching it.

Not a peep to be said about how they actually transported them there and back to wherever.

They should have made this movie under a different name than to tie it into a great movie like Gladiator.

They caught the sharks as babies and raised them until they were full blown cold blooded killers.

They had mock naval battles, but there are no written accounts of sharks ever being used in the Colosseum, as it was most likely impossible at the time.

Yeah, watching Denzel recreate his "Training Day" character, just didn't fit. No star power to the main character. Also the over-the-top, effeminate, and overacting of the co-emperors, was too much. It was OK. It definitely didn't meet the standards of a Gladiator sequel. Which is why some classics need to be one offs.

For the record, I got the same vibes with the 300 sequel as well.

I think a lot has to do with the leading men of the films.

In Gladiator, you had Russel Crowe

In 300, you had Gerard Butler

In the sequels, you had two nobodies trying to fill the shoes of two iconic performances.

Easier to fill Colosseum with Water and transport ships there for the Naval battles, but transporting a bunch of sharks and drop em in Colosseum would be quite the logistical nightmare back then! :D

A lot of tour guides in Rome will tell you when touring the Colosseum that the naval battles were nothing more than ships on wheels being pushed by slaves over the sand.  That it would be practically impossible to go through the actions of pulling the flooring/stage up, flooding the lower levels, and keeping the water level at a height at which ships could actually float around and not be weighed down and stuck by the people upon them.  The water would flood/drain out through cracks and such faster than any aqueduct could be diverted to fill it.  And the parts that didn't flood or drain would hold water that would mold and produce bacteria to the point that any gladiator in the next year that enter it with an open wound would be expected to catch an infection that most likely resulted in death.

It was an okay movie, but as a sequel to a great movie it was horrible. The cgi was utter trash too

Makes complete sense.

Definitely this was a big factor, too big shoes too fill.
