I believe the reason Bob feels this way is because he's dimwitted.
For some people, bench press feels fine. And if they want to do each week, then that's what they should do.
If you don't like doing bench, then don't do it.
If your mechanics are sound, if your tendons can handle it, and if you feel a good connection when doing it, then keep doing it. If your shoulder hurts after benching, you need to investigate your form and determine if you may have issues that need fixing.
If Bob feels crappy when he benches, it's possible he has muscle issues/form that he should correct.
