Im currently in a cutting cycle, and doing just fine with losing fat. Only problem is I feel like I am losing some mucle with it too. Glutamine is supposed to help stop muscle break down, but how much and when should I take it.
It does not matter what supplements you take when cutting. You'll lose muscle if you don't take care of what's most important:
1. Lose the weight slowly, 1/2 lbs to 1 lbs a week, over a period of four to six months, depending on your current condition and your goal.
2. High Protein: Keep your weights heavy and your protein high, whether from food or protein powder
3. Moderate Carb: Do not go low carb. Keep your carbs moderate and gradually decrease them over the period of your cutting cycle. If your carbs are too low, your body will break down muscle to extract the Glutamine from your muscle and turn the Glutamine into glucose for energy. This is where supplementing with Glutamine may help a little, but not much. You want to avoid this. Your glucose should come from the carbs in your diet. All the Glutamine powder in the world is not gonna help you if your carbs are too low. But supplementing with Glutamine is still a good idea just to make sure you have all your bases covered.
4. Low Fat: Keep your fat low. The only fat you should be getting is, as others here have already said, from essential fatty acids(EFA), fish oils, flaxeed oil, etc. Remember that EFAs still pack 9 calories per 1 gram, more than twice as much as carbs and protein. So watch your amounts.
There are many other things that will help you lean out while keeping muscle, but those will do nothing to help you if you ignore the above. Good luck!
