Why not both?  Plus, you didn't state the type of protein you're using (which should be casein and NOT whey). You may want to try instead a solid protein source which is more slowly absorbed than a protein drink.  I make a cup of low fat cottage cheese with 2tbs wheat germ and 3 flax capsules on the side.  When I wake up post- midnight, I eat  and then go back to sleep.

 I agree w/ MRambo here...

Why not both? My favorite nightime anabolic shake is 6 pumps of liquid eggs...1 cup of skim milk, 1 scoop of chocolate RESPECT protein by Pride Nutrition, 3 essential fatty acid(efa's) gelcaps...w/ a little glutamine.

Just dont go pure whey at night like that...throw in a little fat but avoid adding sugar or extra carbs.

Make enough for 1 serving at night(before bedtime) and when you wake up to pee which should be like...3am...finish the second serving or half serving then go back to bed.

Thats a fast-track way to stay non-catabolic. It works...be disciplined about it. If you cant do it everynight of the week...pick 3 or 4 at the most nights you know you can swing it. Good luck.

Thanks guys....Unfortunately I got a great deal on Why protein and bought 3 tubs so once they are done will buy a milk/casein blend.. I was lured to the dark side but have come back to see the light  ;D

A shake at night goes easier on my stomach, which is why I choose this....

BLockhead, can you actually say the Gultamine helps? I have read more negative than positive....

Appreciate the info...

Mix the protein with milk (which is casein).  If the milk has fat in it, all the better.

Fiber slows down the absorption of carbohydrates.

Fat that is part of food slows down the absorption of protein and carbs.

I've read a couple of studies showing fat that is not part of the food acts similar to the oil and water not mixxing theory therefore not having an effect on absorption.

Still take your fish oil / flax oil and also include the fiber in the diet, but don't be misled into thinking they're "slowing things down".

PrincessL is one smart chick , man I swear! Everything she posts or says...is usually dead-on-balls accurate...(thats an industry term, by the way).

A little glutamine won't hurt littleguns...5 grams maybe.

If you are pre-contest...or trying to lose bodyfat when you wake up to pee in middle of the night...try a serving or two or three of BCAA caps or powder and a little bit of glutamine.

                                       Holla!

Princess...I can confirm that when I take a Whey shake before bed, I get up to urinate quicker/sooner than taking the same shake with Flax seed oil.

Not really sure if this means the flax is truly slowing down the absorbtion or not

I use a protein blend (whey/casein/egg albumin) before bed.  Dry cottage cheese with some low-fat yogurt works too.

I don't even bother with a shake before bed anymore.

I just started taking a tablespoon of Flax or Hemp oil & then 5-6 liver tablets. If I'm feeling really hungry I might eat a can of Salmon (but that's a big maybe).

Actually, thinking in the way of Rimbaud (dessicated liver tabs I take it?), they may be better than a shake before bedtime.I used these while a teen before bedtime & also during the day & they worked great for myself.Maybe because a concentrated form (hard tablet) of protein the bodys process of digesting them is slower thus giving you a longer rate of protein being fed to the muscles?Anyone have an opinion on this?

I love liver tablets, but id still go with the shake. You would have to swallow a lot of tabs to get the protein needed. Put a tablespoon of flax in your protein shake, hell put it in all of your protein shakes throughout the day and some of your meals. You will get the slower absorption you wanted plus you will feel better and get leaner(if your diet is not all crap of course)

Yup, the Universal ones. They're cheap as hell...only about ten bucks for 500.

I'm not so sure about that. I've been experimenting this year with eating less protein. I've cut my protein intake from about 300 grams a day to about 175 grams a day. I've noticed that I don't feel bloated & my recovery time isn't affected. (btw I weigh about 235).
