Heard a pastor say that the sin of PRIDE
« on: October 01, 2006, 10:43:00 AM »
is the foundation of every other sin there is.

He wasn't only referring to the fact that pride was the cause of Satan's fall and thus the foundation of every sin ever to occur subsequently, but he believes that in each of us as individuals, a part of each sin we commit (be it adultery, gluttony, murder, whatever) is pride.

What are your thoughts on this?

It's not a new observation. I had to google it (it's been too long  :'() but here's the Thomas Aquinas quote from the 13th century: "inordinate self-love is the cause of every sin... the root of pride is found to consist in man not being, in some way, subject to God and His rule."

However, during the medieval ages the unruly masses had to be contained within a strict class system. This teaching was a way of keeping the low man from aspiring to more than his station. I think in Dante's Inferno - Pride, Wrath, and Envy are given as equal examples of mis-directed (self) love.

  That has some merit.

He is partially right.
There are many sins caused by other devices, like loathe.

Suicide, which is a geat sin, is rarely caused by pride. Most often in the western world it is due to loathe.
Gluttony also can be caused by an etreme low value of self worth.

Most cases of theft are not from pride, but from loathe, like feeding a junky feeding drug habit. Drug addicts often hate themselves and view self medication as the only way out of their addiction, there is little pride there.

In my opinion, Sins are caused by people out of balance. I think that if you are centered you won't have a reason to commit sin.

In my view
Loathe = Despair in hope—Those who despair in hope, cease to hope in salvation from God or help in attaining forgiveness of sin (CCC 2090). Christian hope sustains a believer’s faith and dependence on God, and should not be neglected or rejected.

I disagree.  I believe fear is the cuase of most sin and the other cuase is lack of self control.  But then again I don't think it's a sin to attracted to a beautiful women.........even if you are married.  However, it's a sin to act on it!

How does fear cause most sin?

I agree lack of self control is a primary factor in most sin.

Being attracted to a beautiful woman is not sin.  Lusting after a woman who isn't your wife is a sin.

Fear causes quite a bit of sin.
Fear of others. Racism, ethnic clensing, religous wars for example.
Fear of failing. self loathing,
Fear of success. sabatoging life, drug addiction, povertym

those are exampoles I can think of, off the top of my head, There are more examples of how Fear can be a very negative emotion.

I think the reason Pride comes into it is - if you are serving the Lord in all humility to your fullest capacity you wouldn't fall into commiting the other sins.

Gluttony for example, can be seen as a form of self-love because all you're concerned with is appeasing your own appetites.

Here's Answers.com's definition of PRIDE

pride (prīd) pronunciation
n.

   1. A sense of one's own proper dignity or value; self-respect.
   2. Pleasure or satisfaction taken in an achievement, possession, or association: parental pride.
   3. Arrogant or disdainful conduct or treatment; haughtiness.
   4.
         1. A cause or source of pleasure or satisfaction; the best of a group or class: These soldiers were their country's pride.
         2. The most successful or thriving condition; prime: the pride of youth.
   5. An excessively high opinion of oneself; conceit.
   6. Mettle or spirit in horses.
   7. A company of lions. See synonyms at flock1.
   8. A flamboyant or impressive group: a pride of acrobats.

If GOD doesn't want us to have Pride in the sense of the first 2 definitions then IMO it's more religous dogma created to keep you down.  Keep you thinking htere is something wroing with you.....along the lines of "Born with sin"  which really means "born to fail"

That's a big bunch of church driven BS.

We were born to succeed.

pride can cause trouble, or keep you out of it. one may have too much pride to lie, cheat or steal etc
