Myo-D to replace Fish Oil????
« on: October 18, 2006, 06:02:06 AM »
This is a new product by AST.  I have not tried it and probably won't, at least not yet.  I knew that they were working on finding a way to get more EPA without having to consume bottles of stinky fish oil caps.

Has anyone else tried it?  What's your opinion on this?

Myo-D™ Ingredients: High Ratio 5:1 EPA/DHA Fish Oil Ethyl Ester Concentrate, Gelatin, Leucine, Glycerin, Arginine, Methionine Powder, Safflower Oil, Purified Water, Yellow Beeswax, Carmine Dispersion, Lecithin, Titanium Dioxide.

"Fish oil supplements are a poor source of EPA, for two reasons. Firstly, even high quality fish oil capsules only contain up to 180 milligrams of EPA. Do the math and you’ll find you need to swallow around 12 capsules everyday in order to obtain the minimum dose thought to provide an effect.

Secondly, research shows that the amount of EPA incorporated into tissues (such as muscle) is not only dose dependant but also ratio specific. EPA has to compete with other fats in the diet to become built-in to cell structures. A higher ratio of EPA to other fats in the diet means that more EPA is effectively incorporated into tissues. Fish oil capsules provide equivalent amounts of EPA and DHA.

Therefore, regardless of how many you take, fish oil capsules will do nothing to increase the ratio of EPA in the diet!

Myo-D contains a unique 5:1 ratio of EPA to DHA. This makes Myo-D the most potent source of EPA available. This unique ratio means that supplementation will be effective at increasing the ratio of EPA in the diet, unlike fish oil capsules. With Myo-D you’re getting much more of what you need and a lot less of what you don’t need."

There's been a lot of research showing moderate dosages of Fishoil have significant beneficial effects. The epa dosage ratio can be controlled by decreasing the other types of fat in your diet. I wouldn't take the bait just yet..

They sure didnt do their homework at my store we sell fish oil with up to 400mg EPA.  Also most fish oils have more EPA than DHA so the whole "not affecting the ratio" thing is bull.  If you want to sell me something fine, just dont lie to me to do it.

^ concur

Most of the well-known studies out there have used a 2:1 ratio EPA/DHA.
