Decent jack of all trades art, but master of none.  I would recommend you specialise in one range, and then train transitions from other arts to hone your game.

It's alright, personally I prefer SYSTEMA...  they're both valuable but only if you already have experience in one or two arts.. most of the people that take KM or SYSTEMA already have several black belts in Karate, Tae Kwon Do, etc. etc.
Both arts are extremely efficient though (well figures, they were created for use by special forces units)

What about for law enforcement purposes.  Is there one that people would recommend for LEO officers?  BTW, I will get my CCW as soon as I stop procrastinating.

Hapkido is a good art for Law Enforcement Officers. I've trained a few officers with my old sensei and his father figure Grand Master Bong Soo Han teaches CIA,FBI, and L.A. police every year...

Gotta disagree with you their Sin.  They'd be better off taking some greco roman wrestling/judo with some weapons retention training.

I went to a defensive tactics & edged weapon defense class for work awhile back.  The instructor was big into Krav Maga, and I wasn't too impressed with what was taught.  I guess if you practiced the shit at full speed on a regular basis it would be nice to know, but I agree that wrestling/judo or some sort of submission grappling is best for law enforcement purposes.

If you wanna do weapons training, find a good Kali Guro.

You really think so.... explain if you don't mind. the reason i ha said Hapkido is because its a very unforgiving art... at elast for the recieving end... and its very close combat. lots of throws and most moves from my experience are very threat ending.(meaning you have ended the threat) I mean i'm just curious bulldog.. as we usually tend to agree i just dont see what wrestling would do for a cop why would you wnat to take the fight to the ground and if there is more then one perp what good is wrestling going to do for the cop then....

There used to be a couple of third degree black belts that came to train at Relson's place in the early nineties.  They used to comment about some of the techniques we'd be doing saying they are actually Hapkido techniques and they were familiar with them.  Then when we would spar, they wouldn't be able to pull off any techniques, would get tapped by white belts and would complain about the sparring.

I think they don't spar full contact like BJJ and judo, and as such, don't functionalise the techniques.  Everyone does the same things, not everyone is able to make them functional.  If you are a cop, you'd better be able to pull some of the newaza off, or you are in deep Kim Chee.  (Korean reference there)

Bulldog you make me laugh.... referring to the last comment... but yeah that makes sense i guess. Not sure how all instructors do it. But we went full force or 3/4 that.... i remember the first throw i learned... If you resist you will be spiral fracture your arm and be in a cast for 2 years.. all my instructor said was don't resist. granted it hurt like hell and he threw me pretty damn hard for being a white belt. But i loved it and became his favorite student since i was the dummy always volunteering to be thrown and tossed like a ragdoll. But yeah i love the art and seriously have seen the effects that the art can do... but i guess Martial Arts are like women... everybody has their own taste, and does their own thing....

The reason most people don't last in BJJ or judo is it is very grueling.  You are either being thrown on your head (like a seo nage) or having a monster sit inside your guard, sweat on you and beat the snot out of you.  It is not for everyone, but who said fighting was easy.  Muay Thai is another martial art that is brutal on the body.  You take a ton of punsihment, must be in sick condition, but you know you can bang.  I'd rather have aches and pain and know that I am functional than operate with a false sense of security and get my ass handed to me by a young polynesian thug.

Yeah but i would think that Nightclub and Law Enforcement are a huge differance... I worked nightclubs since i was sixteen my mom used to do the gig and then she worked me into the place.... Kickbocking and just training helped me out... didnt have to many issues and i am not a huge monster but was very respected. and half the time i had locals that would stop the issue before i could make my way over to the issue... pretty funny and easy nights work.. damn i miss that comared to the office job.....

This is an excellent book. Practically every self-defense situation is covered. FYI Charles Gracie is Renzo's older brother.

It is a very good choice for a cop.  Learning to control a subject and put them in a position to handcuff them would be things essential to know for law enforcement personnel.

Yeah wrestling would be good if you have one Perp. But what if you have more then one perp. I would think that wrestling would get you in a possition you wouldnt want to be if there was more then one Attacker... but then again i guess you have a gun for that.......
