I'm taking it late night in capsule form (4g) as an anti-catabolic measure,  In my view/experience, it's probably not the type of supplement where you can observe results directly.  Read the literature and if you find the case for glutamine convincing you add it and take the rest on faith.

2-5g is an absolute placebo amount when it comes to glutamine.

glutamine is mainly absorbed by the intestines, and the good thing about glutamine is, when your intestines are fed on glutamine from supplementation, they don't feast on other amino acids coming along.  ;D

talk about 10g 3 times a day, then we have a proper glutamine supplementation. worthless in my opinion though.
nice if you have the money or a cheap glutamine source, otherwise drop it.
I have both, money and a cheap source, yet i find it useless.
be sure to have protein, amino acids, BCAA, creatine, then think about glutamine.

i would have some ZMA, green tea extract or the likes when it comes to boosting the immune system.

I only been supplementing glutamine for a few weeks and what I've noticed so far:

- seem to recover quicker from workouts, not as sore the next day
- my overall mood and energy is MUCH better than before, this alone makes it worth it for me at this point

Do a search on google for glutamine and mood. The brain runs on glutamine and also glutamine converts into the brain chemical GABA which is responsible for relaxation and calmness. Also glutamine promotes GH release, dunno if this would make a big impact on muscle building but it can't hurt.

I take 5 grams on waking up, 5g after a workout and 5g before bed.

If you look for a amino acid that helps with the overall feeling and better mood, get 2-3g of L-Thyrosin in the morining first thing.
It's way better than glutamine, you need less and it's even cheaper.

Thanks for the tip. Im also interested in the alleged properties of L-Theanine (amino acid found in tea especially green tea). It is said to promote relaxation and mood. I've ordered some and look forward to experimenting with it. Might also have to check out tyrosine as you mentioned.

I wonder if it would be a good idea to take short breaks from consuming free form aminos, to give you brain a rest as downregulation of various receptors might occur?

shouldn't be a problem as long as you are mentally stable. thyrosine is pretty addictive, gives better boosts than ephedrine, mood-wise.

Too much of the same over a long time isn't a good thing in the most places, if were not talking money or the beloved family, hehe.  ;D ;D ;D

Hate to disagree with you but...

Moreover, according to new research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, there may be an additional advantage to supplementing with small, frequent servings of a glutamine supplement.  You see, logic would dictate that if you take a ton of glutamine, you'd expect most of what you ingest to show up where it's supposed to--which, for glutamine, is the bloodstream.  However, with glutamine, that just doesn't happen.  Studies show that between 50 percent to 85 percent of large glutamine loads ingested orally (as opposed to via an intravenous drip) don't reach the bloodstream.  Instead, such large doses typically raise a red flag, prompting the liver to accelerate its removal from the bloodstream.  Smaller loads, on the order of 2 grams to 3 grams, have been shown to increase plasma glutamine levels by about 19 percent without "provoking" the liver to initiate housecleaning duties.

T. Welbourne, "Increased Plasma Bicarbonate and Growth Hormone After an Oral Glutamine Load," Amer. J. Clin. Nutr. 61 (1995): 1058-1061.
So according to this, taking large doses of glutamine, is a complete waste of money!

I have been using glutamine for over 8 years.  1 tea spoon in the 2 shakes I take daily.  The results arn't drastic growth, but you don't get the DOMS from over doing it, which I usually do.  Plus in all the time I've used it I haven't had a cold or any other flu like symptoms that most everyone gets once or twice a year.  That I attribute directly to using glutamine.

In some European countries it's given to burn victims to accelerate healing and to HIV patients to prevent muscle wasting.

It rocks when you're dieting also.  You won't loose nearly as much muscle as you will burn fat.  It's one of those supplements that you need a good 3 months at doses of 10 grams divided into 2 doses.  Also taken before bed it has been shown to help release GH during deep sleep.  Give it a fair shot and make up your own mind.
