"The source said Shannon was offered the job on Thursday and accepted later in the day. Financial terms weren't immediately known, but Shannon's annual salary is believed to be more than $1 million per season."

Good work if you can get it.

I think they mentioned race because he's 6 of 117 (or something like that).  That was one line in the story.  Looks to me like he got the job because is a former Hurricane, played and coached on national championship teams.

I guess anyone who believes there is a "good old boy network" would care if the guy is black.  I don't think it's a big deal.  It will come down to wins and losses.  Doesn't matter if he's green.  If he wins, they will love him.

I think they had Willingham on a very short leash.  Didn't he have a record that was pretty similar to Weiss over their first 2 or 3 years?  I know several Notre Dame alums who were not happy at all with the way they treated Willingham.

That sounds about right.  And I think he and Weiss had about the same record during their first two years.  Willingham wound up getting fired.  Weiss got a raise and a contract extension.

Weiss is in his third year I believe and last year ND went to the Fiesta Bowl.  I don't think Willingham went to a bowl, again I could be wrong.

I just looked at their records.  If my numbers are correct, it looks like this:

02:  10-3 - Willingham (lost bowl game)
03:  5-7 - Willingham
04:  6-6 - Weiss (lost bowl game)
05:  10-2 - Weiss ( lost bowl game)

So, Willingham went 15-10, lost a bowl game, and was fired.  Weiss went 16-8, lost two bowl games, and was rewarded with a contract extension.

It's Weiss' second year and Willingham had that program going in the wrong direction. Look at what Weiss did with Quinn. His recruiting classes are amazing too. They've got the #1 QB recruit in the country coming.

Yes, I'm a diehard ND fan.
