Many time its worse, Starship troopers was a great book written in the 50-60's but the movie was bullshit.

BTW, just watched Da Vinci Code.  I was underwhelmed.   :-\

Generally, in my experience, if you read the book first the film tends to suck. Prime examples are:

American Psycho (Pretty much un-filmable, due to content.).
Bonfire of the Vanities.
Clockers.
25th Hour.

An exception to the rule, however, is Charles Dickens' Bleak House. Reading that in high school was a most unpleasant experience, whilst the BBC's version last year was brilliant T.V.

It's true those flicks you mention were horrible. But some do translate well. However, you are sooooo right about Bleak House.  Anyone forced to consume the book for academic credit should be placed on suicide watch. Longwinded, oppressive and dull as ditchwater. But somehow that screen adapt was really excellent.

LOL. If you ever get through the Idiot you deserve cash and prizes.  Tried reading it in school as well and got through it, however, not one word registered as I read.  It was like plowing through a car manual.

The movie was decent the book was great.

Palahniuk seems more of a concept person than actual writer.

A friend has raved about Crash for years... says it's a brilliant book. I had a hard time with the movie... the characters seemed so hopeless and dead inside. And the book is supposed to be far more bloody and violent, yes? Ballard apparently said his was the first porno/erotic book about technology... wonder if that's true.
