Sometimes I wonder if there's a benefit to coming off as possibly gay.
I'm reasonably closed off with men I perceive as hetero but super open with gays.

There is. There is.
Reason you are open with them is not that they are gay per say but that they are themselves very open, sociable, talkative, friendly and relaxed in social situations. Their clothes also make ordinary men perceive them as less hostile.
Pickup artists are mistaken for gays a l l t h e t i m e .
