What do you think of this phenomenon?
« on: February 13, 2007, 11:14:06 AM »
Men say I love you first, on average.

Men initiate almost all relational contact.

Men fall in love quicker.

Do you like this approach?  Why or why not?

Yes, I prefer it that way.  Why, I'm not really sure, never thought about it. Maybe there's less to lose when someone else sticks their neck out first.  But maybe it also has to do with the traditional stereotype that men don't like being in relationships. So maybe subconsciously women believe that if they (men) say these things first, or initiate a relationship first, that makes them sincere about their feelings, and not pressured into something.

But I've also read that men fall in love faster because they are much more visual than women. It's supposed to also have something to do with the fact that, women traditionally depended on men to take care of them financially, be the head of the household, etc., so they tended to be a lot pickier. If the only criteria is whether they look good, have good genes to pass on and turn your crank... makes it a little easier.

Makes perfect sense to me. I agree with you on this one, Deedee.

It definitely puts woman in the power position.

But men like the whole challenge thing.  It makes the prize that is conquered seem worth so much more.  :)

men say I love you in order to get laid.  It was on a talk debate forum phonein show on the TV this morning.  They asked how many people say i love you and mean it.  You could choose from 9%, 19% or 99%.  I went for the 99% because I've never told a bad lie ever in my life.

the answer was 19%.  God only knows how they come up with these statistics or find the time to do them.

do women say I love you in order to get married and have children?  I don't know.

Lots of generalizations in this thread.

way to many Miggsy.

When an experimental study points out that women, in a particular hormonal phase, select certain pictures instead of others, it doesn't mean that these findings will translate to real world dating behaviour. The major problem of experimental studies (in this case pseudo-experimental, the researchers could not manipulate the variable hormonal state, but had to pick their subjects accordingly) is that their face-validity is very low. The settings are very clinical and the test itself is usually not even vaguely reminiscent of the actual
situation.
Be very cautious when reading research material and be even more cautious of interpretations of studies by the media, they usually are completely off the mark.

Characteristics of an individual can rarely be infered from group traits. What applies to the group, does not need to apply to the individual.

What I learned is that every relationship has a different flow and different rules. What applies to one partner may not apply to the other. Personality characteristics are greater determinants than gender (cultural exponent of sexe) or sexe itself.
