Fox News ticker: 'Let's hope the magic negro does a good job'
« on: January 01, 2009, 11:47:04 PM »
As if Americans needed any more reminders of how closely aligned with the Republican party the Fox News network is, New Year's Eve brings us this new tidbit.

During it's broadcast from New York City, the network encouraged viewers to send in text messages which, if approved by moderators, would scroll across the Fox ticker at the bottom of the screen.

Moderators, however, let this one slip: "HAPPY NEW YEAR AND LET’S HOPE THE MAGIC NEGRO DOES A GOOD JOB. LOVE JEN AND JOHN C."

there are liberel black men wh call each other the N-word, tony.

Does this make it okay for FOX to run the N-word on the bottom of their screen?

How is that spin? The phrase is inappropriate and the fact that it was originated by a black man doesn't make it less so.Especially, considering it was used without any context whatsoever.

thank you.

The phrase didn't belong there.

There are a lot of bad words and derogatory phrases used by people of every political belif.

FOX was quite irresponsible to approve and run that message there.

LOL so its ok for a black man to use it? ignorance thats the problem with society its the double standard

Yes if they use it in context then yes they arent running around going negro this and negro that like you would have ppl think. It was used in context whether you like it or not maybe you should research the topic before knee jerking.

Fox went out of their way to illustrate this story so im sure that the vast majority of ppl watching the show knew exactly what it was referring too. If the phrase is inappropriate and you both believe it to be then why are there no threads about the person who coined the term and how outraged you are at them?

Way to completely miss the point. Simply because they ran stories on the phrase in the past does not absolve them from the fact that it's an offensive phrase. lt's offensive when a black man uses it and commentators like Rush and Fox News have used the race of the phrase's originator as a shield. They glommed on to the phrase as a means to refer to Obama as "negro"... that is the extent of the phrase's popularity. The only one doing spin here is you.

LOL you jack ass they where reporting a story about some republican politician who sent out a email with the satire song on it and him catching heat for it. You would have been accusing them of censoring for not reporting on it, fuking hillarious you liberals are with your double standards.

Again if its so OFFENSIVE why are there not threads about the person who coined the term and how pissed you are at them?

I thought the point was that a News organization should know better than to let something like that go on the air... not that it's inherently bad, but as an organization, they should know better.

It's no worse than calling someone "nappy headed hoes" and getting your show cancelled and being fired because of it.

It's just bad form... Not that I really give a shit.

Pretty classless from Fox. Surprising that it "slipped" by the moderator? Nope.

They shouldn't have let it slip by them, but is the word "negro" offensive?  It does appear that people who use the term often do so in a derisive way, but what about The United Negro College Fund?  Should they change their name?

well the guy that coined the term is a columnist for a paper if im not mistaken and did so in his column.

At any rate if fox news had not reported about the republican politician getting heat over his email then 240 would have started a thread about that  ::) LOL either way ppl would bitch.

apparently to al and 240 ya they should b/c its offensive when anybody uses it, even though there are no threads about the person who coined the term.

If people try hard enough, I am certain they can find ways to be offended.

I wonder who was offended when Obama's spiritual advisor said he was tired of "negroes" in this "sermon"?  (It's at 3:30).

I think it's good that people from the right, center, and the left all seem to agree that FOX was irresponsible to put this on the air.

No. That group has been around since before the civil rights era, when the term negro was still in vogue.

It's a lot like the word "niggardly".  The word. in and of itself. is not offensive. But it's used so infrequently, that when someone does choose to use it, it's pretty obvious that it's meant to cause confusion and offense.  When someone says "negro" these days,  it's pretty much code for another word.

You've posted this quip twice, as if it's insightful or bears any relevance to the issue. So they reported the story...  so, that means they should continue to refer to Obama as a "magical negro" and not be called out for it? Would they have spent the next four years reffering  to Cindy McCain as a c*nt, had her husband been elected? Would that have been okay, as long as they ran a story pointing out that John McCain had called her one in front of reporters. If CNN or MSNBC  had spent the rest of the campaign referring to "known girl, Cindy McCain", would you start  a thread critiquing them or John McCain?

The article in which the phrase was popularized spent the entire article explaining the premise of the "magic negro". When Fox covered the story during the campaign, no one found their use of the word controversial. When Fox ran the ticker using the phrase, without any context or any credible reason to do so, it was called out for it. It's called context.

I agree it's often a "code," but you have to admit there is a double standard.  Wright used it in the clip I posted.  If the word is truly offensive, he and other black folks shouldn't use it at all, or stop complaining when others use it.  It's similar to the inconsistent use of the "N" word.

Where was the outcry when Wright used the word?

They where not referring to obama with that term a viewer was, you ever see host read ppls emails on their shows it happens with both left and right hosts and they sometimes say racey and innappropriate things. It was in context you knew what it was referring to it wasnt used out of place or in a way that it wasnt intended for I.E. CONTEXT.

I hope the asshole responsible for letting that slip by loses his job.

Totally unprofessional and uncalled for.

Like him or not he's still our President and the office deserves respect.

Let me clarify. It's one thing to criticize a Presidents policies or decision making.

To call him a "magic negro" and showing that garbage on national television? Unacceptable.
