Coconut Oil for fat loss?
« on: May 03, 2007, 01:36:19 PM »
There is this woman at my work that claims to have lost 12 pounds in the last 2 months from simply adding 2 Tbls of Coconut oil to her diet.  Nothing else has changed.  Most of Coconut oil is MCTs.  MCTs were popular in the 80's but not anymore.

Here is a link to what convinced her to try it

http://www.coconutoil.com/ray_peat_coconutoil.htm

Here is an excerp from the author.  It is interesting to say the least.  Any thoughts from you guys on this would be interesting.

Although I had stopped using the unsaturated seed oils years ago, and supposed that I wasn't heavily saturated with toxic unsaturated fat, when I first used coconut oil I saw an immediate response, that convinced me my metabolism was chronically inhibited by something that was easily alleviated by "dilution" or molecular competition.  I had put a tablespoonful of coconut oil on some rice I had for supper, and half an hour later while I was reading, I noticed I was breathing more deeply than normal.  I saw that my skin was pink, and I found that my pulse was faster than normal--about 98, I think.  After an hour or two, my pulse and breathing returned to normal.  Every day for a couple of weeks I noticed the same response while I was digesting a small amount of coconut oil, but gradually it didn't happen any more, and I increased my daily consumption of the oil to about an ounce.  I kept eating the same foods as before (including a quart of ice cream every day), except that I added about 200 or 250 calories per day as coconut oil.  Apparently the metabolic surges that happened at first were an indication that my body was compensating for an anti-thyroid substance by producing more thyroid hormone; when the coconut oil relieved the inhibition, I experienced a moment of slight hyperthyroidism, but after a time the inhibitor became less effective, and my body adjusted by producing slightly less thyroid hormone.  But over the next few months, I saw that my weight was slowly and consistently decreasing.  It had been steady at 185 pounds for 25 years, but over a period of six months it dropped to about 175 pounds. I found that eating more coconut oil lowered my weight another few pounds, and eating less caused it to increase.

I sometimes eat coconut spread (like peanut butter) on toast about an hour before I go to the gym. Good stuff. It has a lot of calories & fiber.

I've been to two major supermarkets and found: (1) olive oil (obviously), (2) almond oil, (3) macadamia nut oil, (4) peanut oil, (5) grapeseed oil, (6) canola oil-  but, no coconut oil.

Where can I find it (e.g., maybe Trader Joe's?)

I think that it's also labelled cream of coconut, and comes in boxed solidified.

I may be wrong?

Whole foods will have it, Vitamin Shoppe as well.
You need to find Raw, Virgin, Organic Coconut oil.
The other stuff is refined. When it's refined, it has been hydrogenated and it becomes a Transfat.

www.eatraw.com  carries it but it's expensive.

Parillo Performance had a coconut oil supplement called Cap-Tri.  It was great. I poured it over my baked potatoes or brown rice or even steak for that matter

It was really helpful when I was on a really low carb diet. I poured it on my meats and vegeatables like broccoli...

I cant believe old school bodybuilders have forgotten about Cap-tri

As most know, the Parrillo Program is based on eating high amounts of protein and complex carbs and keeping fat intake to a minimum. Of course, everyone's metabolism is different and can handle foods differently. If you've worked with the Parrillo program you know that to lose body fat, we recommend cutting carbohydrate calories. We don't dispute the fact that you can lose body fat by lowering carbs, thus reducing insulin. What is wrong with high fat programs is the use of dietary fat. Studies have shown that dietary fat is very prone to being stored as body fat. Not only does dietary fat contribute more to fat stores than carbs or protein, but high fat foods are loaded in cholesterol and trans fatty acids, making you a prime candidate for heart disease. The way you utilize the low-carb strategy on the Parrillo Program is with the help of CapTriŽ is a fat, containing 8.3 calories per gram. However, because of its molecular structure, it digests in the body more like a carbohydrate. In fact, it is burned quicker than carbohydrates and has almost no tendency to be stored as body fat. CapTriŽ is used to sustain energy levels when lowering carbs or adding quality calories to your diet when trying to gain lean mass. That's where CapTriŽ and dietary fat differ. CapTriŽ is the healthy approach to low-carb/high-fat dieting.

I think a trip to Whole Foods is in the works (I usually hate going there, it is overpriced and populated by yuppie freaks- but sacrifices need to be made; plus I'm in the mood for some ostrich).

People I know call it " Whole Paycheck"....
If you can get the one from Eat Raw, get it, pricey though.
Stay away from Spectrum's.

I forget now but some guy told me about some type of coconut oil derived drink that he lost 70 lbs on.  He was telling the truth but I don't remember the name.  I guess the stuff went right to you energy levels and you took a sip whenever you felt hungry thereby cutting out regular meals.
