Free Speach Television
« on: June 01, 2007, 07:07:18 PM »
Anyone else ever watched this whack job station? it is channel 9415 on Dish Network....they have shows like Gay USA, Bush Crimes Commission (alleged torture talk), No homeland No fear (post Bush view of America) amongst other BS....well I was seeing what was on their mind tonight and they were talking about torture at Gitmo (suprise suprise) and what I find crazy as fuck was when the "Dr" was listing the torture we have committed he mentioned 3 things:

Sleep deprivation
Isolation
waterboarding

So lets say I give you waterboarding....lets hear your arguments that sleep deprivation and isolation are torture....
gotta love life

Many people do see those things as torture.

the definition reads:

tor·ture (tôr'chər) pronunciation
n.

   1.
         1. Infliction of severe physical pain as a means of punishment or coercion.
         2. An instrument or a method for inflicting such pain.
   2. Excruciating physical or mental pain; agony: the torture of waiting in suspense.
   3. Something causing severe pain or anguish

Sleep deprivation does cause pain mental and physicial
Isolation can be argue as mental pain at a psychological level.

I for one don't see those 2 as extreme torture that should be outlawed or not practiced to gain info.  But they fit into the definition IMO.

American POW's were ordered to salute higher ranking Japanese Military (not that I think they should have had to) in WWII.  Now we torture.  :-\

Nope.  Not torture in my book, particularly isolation.  Isolation happens every day in our prisons.

Do they isolate someone for 3 years with zero human contact?

If I was a POW of the Japs I'd be happy to be able to salute......they really sucked.

I know.  I think making them do that was pushing it, they were some dirty bastards.  I'm just saying I can't believe how things have changed.

I don't think it's possible to isolate someone for 3 years with zero human contact.

Every person on death row is isolated.  So is every prisoner who is separated from the general population for various reasons (discipline, safety reasons, etc.).  In our state prisons here, those in isolation are in a tiny cell for 23 hours a day (I've toured them) and they are permitted 1 hour of "exercise" in an enclosed concrete "yard" with no other prisoners present.  Very small area.  Some of them walk around the yard like zoo animals.  Some just sit.  Some skip it.

Isolation is very common.

Also, this is prison.  It's supposed to be difficult.  They should breaking big rocks into little rocks all day long.

No it isn't impossible.  Lock the person in a cell that has no windows, and small hole to put food in.  We aren't talking about isolation in our prisons.

Sounds like a garden variety American prison to me.  The guards eventually have to come into contact with the prisoner.  No way they can go three years with no contact.

You've seen a jail cell with a slot for food only?   I'm sure some contact is unavoidable, but i don't think someone is put in a room for 3 years without some sort of outside communication and conversation.  People on death row get visitors.

All of cells in the isolation units are set up this way.  Those prisoners don't eat with the general population.

And are we talking about the same prisoners who have been getting plump eating those high calorie diets?

High-Calorie Diet Fattens Gitmo Inmates
By MICHAEL MELIA, Associated Press Writer

Wednesday, October 4, 2006

A high-calorie diet combined with life in the cell block — almost around the clock in some cases — is making detainees at Guantanamo Bay fat.

Meals totaling a whopping 4,200 calories per day are brought to their cells, well above the 2,000 to 3,000 calories recommended for weight maintenance by U.S. government dietary guidelines. And some inmates are eating everything on the menu.

One detainee has almost doubled in weight, to 410 pounds, said Navy Cmdr. Robert Durand, spokesman for the detention facilities at Guantanamo, a U.S. Navy station in southeast Cuba.

Human rights groups attribute the weight gain to lack of exercise. They cite accounts of released detainees who complained they were allowed to exercise fewer than three times a week outside their small cells.

But Durand said detainees are simply served a wide variety of food and are expected to choose what appeals to them.

"The detainees are advised that they are offered more food than necessary, to provide choice and variety, and that consuming all the food they are offered will result in weight gain," he said.

Most of the prisoners at Guantanamo picked up in Afghanistan and other conflict zones were slightly underweight when they arrived. Since then, they've gained an average of 20 pounds, and most are now "normal to mildly overweight or mildly obese," according to the most recent measurements, he said.

The meals include meats prepared according to Islamic guidelines, along with fresh bread, vegetables and yogurt. With nearly all detainees fasting in the daytime during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, authorities have arranged for a post-sunset meal and a midnight meal. Traditional desserts and honey also are served during the Ramadan observances.

i see your point here.

I guess the point i was trying to make that in it's purity isolation is torture.  If isolation cells are the same as they are here in the USA then to me it's not torture and doesn't fit into the definition.

So that leaves water boarding and sleep deprivation.

We agree, except based on what I've read about waterboarding, it doesn't necessarily sound like torture to me.  No physical pain.  No permanent physical injury.  Just fear.

Sleep deprivation?  I guess that depends on how you do it.  Short of taping someone's eyelids open, I don't think playing loud music or keeping the lights on is torture.

In college, someone did a presentation on sleep deprivation and she outline the long term effects.  They weren't good.  don't remember the details though.  You know all they would have to do is mildly shock a person every minute and they wouldn't ever go to sleep.

Yeah.  Long-term sleep deprivation is harmful.  Lowers your immune system, etc.  I guess it depends on how it's done?  Shocking a person sounds like torture.
