The Big One Might Be Coming to Hawaii
« on: June 20, 2007, 08:49:33 AM »
It looks like the Kilauea might erupt soon.  They have closed Volcanoes National Park.  Many minor earthquakes over the past few days, the ground is swelling significantly and parts of other smaller craters are collapsing.  This could be the one coming up.  I am 90 miles away on the other side of the island so hopefully I'll make it.  If I don't fuck you all ;D  No just kidding, I'll miss you guys.

you should go up there and spit in the crater . . . it would be a grand gesture.

Thanks for this update and GODS speed and safety Keith. While we may all differ on various views in bodybuilding, I think it important to act with basic courtesy and human decency when it comes to personal health , safety and well being.
I was considering an actual Hawaii island hopper cruise on NCL this July, now, I sure as hell will head to Mexico.
Thanks and seriously , good luck with this.

A few points:

1) Hasn't Kilauea been erupting pretty much continuously for years?

2) Don't eruptions of Hawaii's volcanoes tend to be relatively gentle outpourings of molten lava, as opposed to the violent explosions and pyroclastic flows seen with most continental volcanoes?

3) Isn't 90 miles a long way away?

and most importantly, if some or all of the above three are true:

From one who has lived through a couple of major natural disasters (volcano eruption, earthquakes and tsunami) I can state for a fact that major calamities can occur that are not a direct result of the disaster itself.

And in a small state such as Hawaii, a small earthquake or a volcano eruption can disrupt the economy for a long time following, thereby adversely affecting the lives of the majority of its residents.

My next door neighbor died of a heart attack during an aftershock and two good friends lost their lives when part of a building collapsed.

I've personally witnessed a couple of lava flows from less than 200 yards away and it was a spectacular sight but it destroyed an entire town on the Big Island. No lives were lost in that catastrophe but most of those residents moved to more stable spots on the mainland and as far away from the San Andreas Fault as possible without going all the way back east.

Yes, to the best of my memory lava has been flowing from the volcano continuously for about the past 18 years.

Yes, as of this date the eruptions have been relatively gentle in the populated areas (but still destructive) but violent explosions are still possible. But lava flows similar to a rageing winter river have occured recently. There are numerous DVD's available. Maybe Keith can post one on the net for us someplace. *Youtube? I'll check to see if there is one there already.

Yes, 90 miles is a long distance on the Big Island and Keith is relatively safe in his location from a lava flow but an earthquake could be disasterous throughout the state. Keith, how far away from Kona was the most recent lava flow? I recall seeing some major flow sites on the way to the airport. Were any of those relatively recent?

Howie, a cruise on NCL during a volcano eruption would be a phenominal sight to see, and completely safe. I recently returned from a similar cruise and we spent a few hours viewing the lava flow at night when it flowed into the sea. The most impressive and beautiful sight I've ever seen and everyone else on that ship felt likewise.  We were completely safe but a couple of days later and midway between Hawaii and California our propeller fell off. I guess that was Madam Pele getting even for intruding into her private domaine.

Here's a shot of some slow flowing lava, Looks like it was taken by a couple of hikers on the Big Island. There have been occurances of hikers stepping on what appeared to be hardened lava only to break the crust and fall into the flowing lava below.

&mode=related&search=

There have been numerious situations where slow flows such as this flow into someone's backyard and pictures have been taken of the home owner doing his best to stop the flow or divert it by watering it with a garden hose or building a rock blockade. I've never heard of either being successful but on some occasions the lava would flow up to a home and then flow around both sides of the house without damaging it.

There are numerous postcards sold on the big island showing some of the strange things that lava flows do.

Jeez Goat I never thoght you were this ignorant.

Yes Kilauea has been erupting for awhile.  But nothing like this.  Did you read anything or just spewing shit out of your piehole.  It has to be pretty serious for them to close the most imporatant and visited sections of the park ::)

If you read at all (or have someone read it to if you can't read) larger sections are collapsing and just a few months ago I think a section measuring 5 acres or so fell into the ocean.  Now cracks and seams are opening on the roads.  But, since you know so much you should call them (the experts0 and tell them they have nothing to worry about.

And like  said 90 miles is far away so I a pretty sure lava wont come here but since you don't read you might not know about VOG.  And a major eruption would probably have some affect here 90 miles away.  But, again being an island expert and volcanic expert like yourself you should know. ::)

And being such an expert like yourself living on an island is not like living on the mainland.  A small earthquake can cause allot fo damage here.  If a bridge goes out here it will disrupt traffic here in a major way since only one road goes around the island except for one shitty road through the middle.  We get our supplies boat ship mainly.  The docks are on pylons which collapse in a major earthquake like they did several months ago.  But as an expert I'm sure you knew that just overlooked it.  Also, we have fresh water from underground wells here.  The water we drink is 25 ears old as it filters through the lava rock.  An earthquake or eruption will have a huge affect on these wells.  But again as an expert you knew that.  So I am glad you just overlooked some things and now probably feel pretty stupid for posting that.  I forgive you.

And yes I am being a drama queen.  I'm going to my pool in an hour and had to do something to pass the time.  It's about 85 degree here already.

Man here is a cool video of the earthquake last year here in Kona.  It was taken with a stationary camera
