The way the Nazis were using the term, they were really referring to "germanic people of northern europe" (as opposed to Celtic, Slavic, Latin, and other european ethnicities, to say nothing of non-caucasians). Forget about the actual historical "Aryans" of northern India, they meant germanic peoples.
