Milwaukee Bucks Select Yi In First Round Of NBA Draft
« on: June 28, 2007, 08:47:16 PM »
MILWAUKEE  --  Disregarding his desire to play in a city with a heavy Asian influence, the Milwaukee Bucks selected Yi Jianlian with the sixth pick in the NBA draft on Thursday night.

The 7-foot power forward will be the fourth Chinese player to make the NBA, but there's no guarantee he'll make the same impact as Yao Ming, selected by the Houston Rockets with the first pick in 2002.

Questions about his defense, strength and age surround Yi Jianlian, who has been protected by handlers who wanted him in a city like Chicago, Los Angeles or the Bay area.

Fan reaction at the Bradley Center, where the Bucks play, was mixed -- with about half the crowd standing and cheering.

His English is basic, but better than Yao's when he was picked five years ago. Yi has been in the United States for several weeks adjusting, and unlike the three Chinese who played before him, he was on hand to witness his selection.

"I played for a national team for a couple of years, I think I'm ready," Yi said immediately after the pick.

Yi has a deft shooting touch from the wing, soft hands and an athletic body, which is compared to that of Pau Gasol of the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Chinese Basketball Association lists his birthday as Oct. 27, 1987 -- which would make him 19 at draft time.

Yi played on China's 2004 Olympic team and 2006 world championship team. In the Chinese Basketball Association this season, he averaged 25 points and 12 rebounds with the Guangdong Tigers.

I have a hard time believing that Larry Harris will hold on to this guy.  He doesn't want to be in Milwaukee and that will diminish his trade value.  I don't see the upside to this pick.  But I'll still go to a few Bucks games to see him play.

i believe its not the fact he wants to be on the bucks..apparently his handlers (the chinese) don't want him playing for the bucks..and ya know what they say goes..so he'll hem and haw for a bit and then probably demand a trade...i bet Boston will take him..

Yao is doing great.  Improved his stamina.  Has a complete game.  He's probably the best true center in the NBA, if you consider Duncan and Stoudamire 4s.

I heard he/they didn't want him in Milwaukee because of the "lack of" a large Aisan community base  :-\

I heard the same thing.  Sounds pretty silly to me.

He's good, but not great.  He's just another decent NBA center who just happens to be Chinese, which means a lot of merchandising dollars now and many, many more in the future.

He's not a franchise player, nor do I believe he'll develop into one.

It's less about the percentage of Asians in Milwaukee as it is the type of endorsement dollars he could command in that town.  He wants to play basketball in the U.S., but his people want him to play for a big-market team, because that'll equate to big-market dollars for them.  And because the NBA is all about the money, you can bank on Stern being ready to facilitate whatever deal it takes to get this guy to a bigger basketball city.

I don't know where he'll land, but would have to consider Boston and L.A. the leading candidates.

Yao's 06 stats:  25 points a game, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, 51 percent from the field, 86 percent from the line.  As good or better than any center in the NBA.

i know, people act like he isnt the best center in the nba. duncan is a five, stoudamire is a five. yao put up better numbers then stoudamire, and matched duncan. He is a franchise player, his team won 50+
