Giuliani, Clinton Widen Leads: Gallup Poll

Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton have both widened their lead over their nearest rivals in the race for their party’s nomination for president in 2008, a new poll reveals.

Among Republicans, Giuliani got 30 percent of the vote in the USA Today/Gallup Poll, up two percentage points from last month. He holds a 10-point lead over unannounced candidate Fred Thompson, with 20 percent – a 1 percent increase from last month – while John McCain got 16 percent of the vote and Mitt Romney, 9 percent.

Among Democrats, Clinton was the choice of 37 percent of respondents, up from 33 percent last month. Barack Obama remained at 21 percent, while unannounced candidate Al Gore got 16 percent and John Edwards received 13 percent.

In the new poll, 48 percent of respondents said they have a favorable opinion of Clinton and 48 percent have an unfavorable opinion. Giuliani fared better, with 55 percent saying they have a favorable opinion of the Republican and only 31 percent saying their opinion is unfavorable.
