This occurred to me from reading the posts of some board members that claim to be religious.

When a person claims to be religious yet openly hates people just because they are different that would seem to me to be hypocritical. It would seem to be at odds with the beliefs of most if not all religions.

I'm curious if any legitimate religions find it appropriate to openly ridicule the physical appearance of older people.

It's been a while since I've followed Catholicism closely but I don't remember it supporting these behaviors.

Oh yeah.  That's how these people are.  If you are not one of them or have their appearance you are scum.  Back in '91 I was in a bit of trouble and my lawyer insisted I go to Church and get enrolled in college ASAP.  Not for any self enlightenment but to make it "look good" for the judge.  Well I went to that church for 2 months.  I knew no one and no one certainly made any attempt to get to know me.  The only one who talked to me was the preacher so he was OK in my book.  Everyone else looked at me like I was a freak show because I had long hair.  Shit..forget about all of the rumors that I found out about later when I quit going to that place.  These actions are all too common in religion.  The concept is great but when you have these people as ambassadors to God it really turns you off.  God might be OK but the people that represent him are a fucking disgrace.

effin, what happened or is this from a discussion carried over from the Political Board or something?

Since you mention older people here are a few scriptures from the bible that seem to indicate that older people are to be respected:

Proverbs 16:31
Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained by a righteous life.
Proverbs 16:30-32 (in Context) Proverbs 16 (Whole Chapter)

Proverbs 20:29
The glory of young men is their strength, gray hair the splendor of the old.
Proverbs 20:28-30 (in Context) Proverbs 20 (Whole Chapter)

windsor88, to a point I agree w/you that people that represent God can be a disgrace.  No human is perfect.  But I hope you don't base all your negative feelings from your experience w/one church.  Even if you just went "to make it look good for the judge," people at most churches wouldn't know that and even if they did would have more than likely approached you and welcomed you.  You think they didn't because you had long hair?  How long ago was that?  Don't let the actions of a few keep you from trying to know God.  Even if they don't, He loves you just as you are :)

It was in 1991.  The tail end of the Metal phase.  No I never believed in the Bible.  Never will.  The church did not turn me off it was just something that reaffirmed my stance on people who claim to live the word of god.  Still holds true to this day.

The basis for my question is a thread on the Politics board but my question was for the Religious Board. I'm sorry it turned into a flame war. This isn't the board for that.

My question stems from reading posts that call for people with different political opinions to be killed and from reading posts ridiculing the appearance of a 50 something woman who's son was killed in Iraq, the people that made these posts claim to be religious. The posts seemed to me to contradict what a religious person would say.

Again, I'm sorry for the direction this thread went. This will be my last post in it.

  • Would you hold still? You're making me fuck up...
I'm afraid some "church people" (not all) are just in Church cause they're afraid of going to hell.  The kind that will run you over or cut line at uh... Cracker Barrel on Sunday after Church. LOL  The kind that make sure everyone around knows they're Christians.  :-\

No worries..you don't have to stop posting in this thread!

No one is perfect and it sounds like tempers were raised which happens to everyone - "religious" or not.  Talking politics seems to raise blood pressure sometimes....that's why I mostly stay off of that board :)

Glad those tweezers worked out for you  ;D

Bro you got to remember that people arent perfect and just because you had a bad example doesnt mean that that is the norm. IF you had come to my church(mormon), i guarntee that at least 4 people would have approached you on the first day you when

What I don't understand is why YOU feel the need to apologize for the direction of the thread?
It's not like YOU were the one who turned it into a hostile name calling fest.

You raised a very legitimate question, ...which was met with hostilitiy.
If anything, you're not the one who needs to be apologizing for the direction of the thread.

...and since no one has decided to actually answer your question... I will.

I believe it's not only hypocritical, ...it's also delusional, ...and betrays an incredible amount of insecurity on the part of those who require such conformity from others. I believe that while they profess to have such incredible faith, the truth is, their faith is extremely fragile... so much so that it cannot survive exposure to anything or anyone who may think differently. In order to protect it... they must stamp out everything else that does not conform. It seems to me that if the faith was indeed strong, ...it would have the patience to allow others to come around to their way of thinking on their own... eventually, ...but a crusader will always be a crusader.  It's simply their nature. :-\
