clearly its time that the IFBB adopt a new way to judge physiques that accounts for subjectivity and meets with the rest of the world in working with metrics and look at using statistics to normalise scores rather than rudimentary, lame adding and averaging.
the other change that should be made is to balance the compulsories to line up better with what the ideal of BB are and were founded on.
There's only 1 pose -arguably 2 poses that consider symmetry and balance, and the other compulsories clearly award mass as they can be done in a way to hide symmetry and balance issues.
perosnally i'd like to see the relaxed pose and abs and thighs, as well as front double bis weighted to give the same overall score as the rest of the compulsories...from there the scoring should be split into symmetry, balance, mass. and then penalties attributed for weaknesses, condition, implants, synthol and presentation.
when it comes to the comparisons- these shouldnt be scored at all- merely used to swap positions around in fine tuning the scores- much like how backgammon is scored- i.e. if you beat a high ranked player, your score moves more thanbeating a bunch of lower ranked players.
What started this for me was watching the 91 and 92 Mr.O which were awarded to the best balanced of the big guys in both years.
clearly in each year they werent the best BB's. Labrada shouldve won in 1990 but it was pre-ordained as Haney was in his best ever condition and was slated to retire...and Yates was the heir apparent...so basically Yates just needed to turn up in 92 to win...despite the 92 mr.o being a battle between labrada and levrone..with yates third.
Flex wheeler would not be so heralded as he would suffered penalties for calf implants, weak ab and thigh and relatively weak front lat spread but wouldve done well in all other areas.
Yates probably wouldnt have won so many in a row, but Haney probably still wouldve won up until the 1990 show.
Ronnie and Jay probably would be the top 2 BBs at 'Os right now, with Dex and other symmetrical BB's being equal or better. Lee P. would certainly be ranked higher as although he appears short, his symmetry is excellent and has very few weaknesses.
The scoring would basically be arranged to that the winner represents the order of what BB was founded on.
i.e.
1. The largest BB with perfect balance, symmetry and no weaknesses in great condition
2. most perfect of the not so large...with emphasis on the most perfect.
3. a good balance of mass and perfection
4. small but perfect
5. large and imperfect
6. small and imperfect
as it standa right now, BBs with physiques that are like (3) or even (5) are beating out competitors in the (2) and (4) classes.
despite the obvious ugliness of those packages.
time judging changed to reward BB fundamentals...
