« on: August 08, 2007, 07:49:05 AM »
so recently i decided to buy a few mangos at the store of which i've never really tried or knew about.

WELL, folks, becareful in eating these little bastards as the skin of a mango (the oils in the skin) have the same chemical as poison ivy!

just a little heads up for those who eat these things.....the rash is called "mango dermatitis"

yeah, they're tasty and loaded with vitamins, but the research i've done says that part of the population is allergic to the oils in the skin.  I found out the hard way!  Its like poison ivy

in the islands we wear gloves when picking them. While there is some content in the skin...most of what ends up getting on you is the "sap" that oozes from the stem when it is plucked.

Just makes sure you wash it really good in warm water w/ soap before you peal it.  Back in the day they would mix the stem "sap" with Kukui nut oil, kava kava and a couple of other things to pour in the water up stream as it would temporarily paralize the fish and they would float downstream into the net.

I've had Poison oak and ivy before and mango itch isn't as bad...you can wash it off and it disappears in a day, unlike the other stuff.
