Gambler gets his £2m back

Gambler wins appeal over £2m debt

A gambler known as the Fat Man has won his appeal against a High Court ruling to pay back a £2m debt amassed in just one night at a London casino.
Businessman Fouad al-Zayat, a regular at Aspinall's, lost £23m over 12 years.

After a dispute during his biggest loss in March 2000, Mr al-Zayat dishonoured a cheque for £2m worth of gaming chips.

A judge ruled he had an arguable court case as Aspinall's delay of almost six years before trying to sue him for the money was an unlawful offer of credit.

The High Court ruling in March ordered Mr al-Zayat to settle the £2m debt plus legal costs because he had no realistic defence if the case went to trial.

But on Friday, three judges allowed the appeal, meaning Mr al-Zayat can now challenge the debt at a trial.

Aspinall's is considering an appeal to the House of Lords.

The row broke out at the club after Mr al-Zayat asked for a change of croupiers but was told none were available.

Later that night, he became angry when he found out there had been staff who could have taken over.

He demanded four house cheques to be returned and claims Aspinall's accepted his own cheque on the understanding it would not be cashed until their dispute was settled.

The gambler then told his bank not to honour the cheque and claimed in court it represented credit which is unlawful under the Gaming Act.

Lord Justice Sedley said: "Piqued at the club's failure to change a croupier, Mr al-Zayat, although he was undoubtedly good for the amount, dishonoured a cheque for £2m which he owed Aspinall's for gaming chips.

"Aspinall's, instead of burning their bridges with Mr al-Zayat by suing him on his cheque, permitted him for another six years to go on gambling so that he could lose millions more pounds to them.

"Then, at the last permissible minute, they sued him."

Fellow judge, Lord Justice Lloyd, said the action was brought only three days before the end of the six-year limit for a claim on the cheque.

In that time, Mr al-Zayat carried on gambling at Aspinall's and lost another £10m, he said.

Lord Justice Sedley said he would allow the appeal but said it was one of those cases "which have everything to do with law and nothing to do with justice".

And how many wanna bet that if he wins his case, and doesn't have to pay his  £2m , the casino will still welcome him back with open arms?

Don't know how much money that is but an old aquaintance owed The Mirage $7 million from gambling.  He came to Vegas for the Grand Opening of the Bellagio.  He was immediately arrested at the airport.  He said he didn't realize he owned the money.  He called Steve Wynn.  Wynn actually went to the jail and got him out of jail and erase the debt and said if he played at the Bellagio.  Well he did and I can't remember how much he lost but it was around $7 or $8 million that weekend.

{LOL} He probably forgot while walking down one of the Mirage's hallways.
Good Grief, just getting to the elevators in that place is like walking a marathon.  :o

Steve Wynn is pretty cool. I was disssapointed he lost his bid to buy the property along Toronto's Harbourfront years ago. I hear his place in Thailand is pretty nice. Some of my colleagues are hosting a huge event there in Chiang Mai this week.

Wynn owned Southern Wine and Spirits in Las Vegas back in the 70's and my uncle was one of the original investors .  Their secretary ended up marrying Steve Wynn and I think is still married.  Southern Wine and Spirits is the exclusive distributor of alcohol in Las Vegas.  I used to go to the company when it was located by the Orleans on Arville I think.  They moved and I just saw the new location.  It has to be a million sq.ft.  It has to be one of the largest buildings in Vegas.  Not to many people know how serious Steve Wynn has glaucoma.

Also, the guy I am talking about owing Wynn goes by his initials "SS".  His family owns millions of sq. ft. of Hong Kong property.  He also owns Hawaii Bank I think its called.  He owned the property where the Hawaii convention center is now.  He sold that at 11:59pm the last day the state had put a bid on the property or something like that.  He waited till the last minute to sell it.  I think he got $60 million for it.  On his 30th birthday he chartered a 747 and flew around the world picking up his friends to go party in Monaco.  And NO I did not get picked up.  The first time I met him he had the most expensive suite at Caesars Palace and was having a pre-fight party for the Hearns Leonard fight #2.  Then an after party.  He was with my uncle Joe and Chuck Norris in Monaco once they told me and he had met a girl.  Every girl he meets he buys them a Rolex.  He invited her to dinner.  He gave her a Rolex.  As they entered the restaurant the girl saw an old bottle of wine and said "who that is so pretty, I collect old bottles".  So they sit down at the table and SS got up and a few minutes later came back with that bottle of wine.  He then preceded to open the bottle and poured everyone a glass of wine.  My uncle told me he found out the bottle cost $10,000 or so I can't remember.  But it was very very expensive.  Anyway, this guy is unreal and has a great time living life.  I haven't seen him in a long time so who knows what he is doing now.
