Less than a year after signing him to a contract extension through 2010, the Baltimore Ravens on Monday fired coach Brian Billick.

The dismissal of Billick was confirmed to ESPN's Chris Mortensen by owner Steve Bisciotti and to ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli by an assistant coach and a front office official.

Billick, 53, compiled an 85-67 record in nine seasons. The Ravens, who won the AFC North championship in 2006, struggled to a 5-11 mark this season, a year that included a nine-game losing streak.

In his second season with the franchise, Billick led the Ravens to the Super Bowl XXXV title in 2000, but never got the club back to the title game.

Only a few weeks ago, Billick proclaimed that he would return in 2008, but Bisciotti, who does not speak during the season, made no statement to that effect.

Not shocked to hear this one bit. Even after he was told by the owner he was returning next season, that was BEFORE the Ravens lost to the previously winless Dolphins.

That loss in my mind sealed his fate. A nine game losing streak didn't help either.

His replacement probably will be defensive coordinator Rex Ryan or Ravens owner Steve Bischotti will really open his wallet to try to lure Bill Cowher out of retirement. That's one rumor already going around the grapevine. I doubt Cowher would come to the Ravens considering his preference to stay south to be closer to his family. Cowher would undoubtedly ask for too much power and control in personeel decisions. The Ravens already have a strong front office headed by Ozzie Newsome. I don't think Ozzie would compromise his power and influence to appease Cowher considering Ozzie's already strong NFL draft record pedigree. Therefore, look for Ryan to take the helm. He's respected and well liked by the players and he was an already strong head coach candidate during this past offseason.

Look for Billick to be a head coach elsewhere in 2008. His ego would not allow him to accept being an offensive coordinator again. No chance.

I'm stoked. It was time for the team to go in a new direction. The fans in town here were growing tired of Billick's arrogance, his antics(blowing kisses to opposing players, etc.), and his condensending I'm-smarter-than-you attitude to the media and general public.

I'm not. I've been wanting him out of town now for 3 years. The guy is a arrogant dick, plain and simple.

He will coach again, no doubt. I'm sure someone will give him another shot in 2008.

You read my mind. The Rams would be a good fit for him, I think.

Or the Dolphins, maybe? Parcells and Billick on the same team? THAT would be entertaining! The media would have a field day with those two.

Man, I'm starting to miss the guy already! Not many coaches out there like this:

I'm glad, I moved down here in Redskin country, And all I have been hearing was how arrogant Billick is. I've always agreed to that. But you be arrogant, once you have a losing season. You keep your mouth shut until you produce. Just because your team is responsible for changing every others teams defense, does not mean you can sit on your laurels.

I remember his "Lion speech", that was some entertainment...

I could def see Billick with the rams. Who are you thinking about for the Ravens? How about Mike Singelterry? Perfect fit IMO. The man demands respect when he walks in a room without saying a word , good guy , good coach , HOF player.

He is with the niners now I believe. LB coach? Can a niners fan weigh in here?

I heard a rumor that Shanahan wants to go help the falcons. Thats where I had Mike going before.

I'm thinking former defensive coordinatior, Rex Ryan has a solid shot but not after owner Bischotti canned him to along with most of Billick's staff.

Jason Garrett from the Cowboys is being mentioned and even the O-coordinator for the Pats.

Mike Singletary is not experienced enough to be a head coach, in my opinion. He needs to land a D-coordinator job first.

Mcdaniels is very young. Garret would be the better choice imo. Josh is very good at what he does , but he is still very young. I dont know if he can lead NFL egos when times are tough. Not because he cant , but because he is so young. I think Singleterry would be a great choice.

It's a shame that he was fired.  I know he comes off as arrogant, but I think a lot of that is a "front" because it's the NFL.  He's probably whipped like a pup at home on a regular basis.  In all seriousness, I think the guy is a good coach, and that in today's NFL, few coaches last very long unless there are multiple Super Bowls won.

I have spoken.

No offense, Philly Boy, but you don't have your finger on the town's pulse. People around here have been calling for his head for more than 4 years. Even during the 13-3 season, he drew heavy criticism for some of his offensive playcalling for being too cute and conservative.

If you're relying on media sources such as ESPN to find out if a coach is being complained about, then you're hearing things only by topics that were PURPOSELY stated by their sources.

Local media, radio shows and just plain old bar talk...Billick constantly gets shit here in Baltimore because of his arrogance to the media, his continued lack of an offense for 9 years, and losing the locker room respect from his players.

Billick is a very intelligent man and I think he's a good, not great coach. But he really needs to tone down his ego because it tunes people out. Very good verbal motivator as well and the players love it at first, then grow tiresome of it by midway the season.

I bet anyone he will be offered a head coaching position in 2008. Atlanta and the Rams are strong possibilities for him. Hell, the first team that interviews him will probably offer a contract to him same day. Billick is as good as it gets when it comes to representing himself. He's a good mind fucker when it comes to making you believe in what he's saying. As I said already, very smart and a crafty fucker.
