Three suspects detained in Taylor case
« on: November 30, 2007, 10:55:28 AM »
MIAMI -- Police have detained at least three people in the Fort Myers area for questioning in the death of Washington Redskins football star Sean Taylor.

A law enforcement official in Lee County confirmed the men from the Fort Myers area were in custody, but requested anonymity because the investigation is being handled by Miami-Dade County police.

Miami-Dade police Detective Carlos Maura said he was not aware of anyone in custody. He said only that detectives were in the Fort Myers area for a case, but declined to say which one.

The Miami Herald, which first reported the development on its Web site, said investigators believe three suspects learned of Taylor's house through someone who unwittingly set up the burglary by bragging about his wealth. The suspects include two teenagers and a man in his 20s, all from the Fort Myers area, the paper reported.

A telephone message left at the Florida City Police Department for Taylor's father, Chief Pedro Taylor, was not immediately returned.

Richard Sharpstein, a former Taylor lawyer and family friend, said: "It looks like the police are pursuing extremely good leads. It appears that the burglary was exactly as I've always stated, not random, that Sean's house was targeted."

Evidence at Taylor's home indicated one or more intruders barged into the house early Monday in an attempted burglary, Miami-Dade police director Robert Parker said Wednesday. After a confrontation inside the home, Taylor was shot once in the upper leg and died early Tuesday after losing a tremendous amount of blood.

Taylor's family has scheduled a funeral service for 11 a.m. Monday at Pharmed Arena at Florida International University in Miami.

Bet $100 at least one of them has dreadlocks.

If I've learned anything from watching the First 48, it's that 50% of murders in Miami are committed by guys with dreadlocks and white tank tops/tees.

These guys are all KIDS. I don't think any one of the four suspects are over the age of 20.

So sad and pathetic.

(excerpts from the AP article taken from espn.com)

Police said the suspects were looking for a simple burglary, but it turned bloody when they were startled to find Taylor home.

"They're terrified," said Sawyer Smith, who along with his father, Wilbur, represent Rivera and Mitchell. "These are young boys who are absolutely terrified about the position in which they find themselves."

John Evans, the attorney representing Wardlow, said it's likely all four suspects will be transported to Miami on Sunday. He said his client was reflecting on the gravity of the charges he faces.

"My client has not, I don't think, come to terms with what is being alleged," Evans said. "He's in a position, dressed in the orange jumpsuit over there in the county jail, thinking about his life and thinking about his future. You can only imagine the things going through his mind now."

Awww, feel sorry for my little thug client.

Police remain tightlipped about how the suspects wound up at Taylor's home. The Miami Herald reported Mitchell cut the player's lawn and did other chores at the house...

The high price of trying to help a young brotha out.

In Fort Myers, a woman who identified herself as Wardlow's grandmother but declined to give her name defended the accused. "He's a sweet young man," she said. "I love him to death, and that's it."

It happens sometimes, but *rarely* is a 'sweet young man' accused of murder.

Police say they're sure, however, that the four suspects didn't expect to kill anyone.

"They were expecting a residence that was not occupied," Miami-Dade County police Director Robert Parker said. "So murder or shooting someone was not their initial motive."

And I care about this, because...?

------

Their motive means NOTHING.  They shot and killed a man during the commission of a felony.  Can anyone cite the appropriate FL laws for us on this?

I'm concerned about all the apparent excuse-making and 'aww, they're just kids' bullshit.

I want them treated just as harshly as if they'd killed an elderly White woman.

Let me get this straight, these poor innocent boys were just minding their business, commiting a little bit of simple burglary on a what was expected to be a quiet peacefull night when suddenly a violent and ferocious NFL-player and his vicious wife appeared out of nowhere in their bedroom and attacked them with a razor-sharp machete. Luckily they were able to heroically defend themselves and shoot this brute.

These sweet young boys are shocked and bewildered from the charges against them. You can only imagine their despair. Let's all pray that justice will prevail...

They took a loaded gun with them... Usually when you're carrying that you're willing to use it and thought about it in advance (at least when they bought it).

Pretty soon they will see how glorious the "thug life" really is...

Being as young as they are, they probably are a group of copy cat criminals with no remorse who lived out their rap inspired fantasy of robbing the high priced home of a professional athlete.
