In the latest poll of Republicans likely to vote in the January 3 Iowa caucuses, Rep. Ron Paul is tied with former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani -- for fourth place.

Paul and Giuliani each polled the support of 8 percent of likely caucus voters, just behind former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee, who received 9 percent support.

Paul, Giuliani and Thompson all trailed the leading candidates, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, by double-digit margins.

The surging Huckabee leads the poll with the support of 35 percent of likely Republican caucus voters. Romney placed second with 27 percent support.

The poll was conducted December 13-17 by The Washington Post and ABC News. The survey of 501 likely Republican caucus voters carries a margin of error of plus or minus 4 points.

The results mark a significant shift from last month's edition of the same poll. In November, Romney led the field at 28 percent with Huckabee in second place at 24 percent. Last month, Thompson was in third place with 15 percent, Giuliani was fourth with 13 percent, and Paul was tied for fifth place with Sen. John McCain of Arizona, each with 6 percent.

In the current poll, Huckabee supporters tend to be more firmly locked-in to their candidate than Romney's supporters. Sixty percent of Huckabee supporters said they will "definitely" vote for him on caucus night. Only 49 percent of Romney's supporters said that.

Likely Iowa Republican caucus voters gave Romney credit for his campaign efforts in their state. Sixty-one percent said he had campaigned the hardest there of any GOP candidate.

However, they gave Huckabee the edge over Romney for understanding their problems best (35% to 23%), being the most trustworthy (35% to 23%) and best reflecting the core values of the Republican Party (34% to 25%).

I think I know why the numbers for Ron Paul are off and if I'm right, it's a legit reason.

First, when you get the call, you have to hit other to get to Ron Paul's name.  But why I think it is really off is that I think they are calling established lists of registered republicans.  I'm thinking that anyone registered recently to vote for Ron will not be getting calls.  When you call, Rudy is one of the first options, that he is tied with people clicking through to other to get to Ron Paul as an option might say something. and much of his support might not be registered republican.  I simply won't do that.  He needs to run independent, which I am pushing for, for me to vote for him.

this is hilarious.   just mindboggingly hilarious.  Ron Paul has gone from less than 1% to tied with Rudy in what, 3 or 4 months?

He's got 3 more weeks.  What happens when Paul gets 3rd in Iowa? LOL...
