Is this a standard thing I've just never noticed

Very common. 

Other times you'll see them holding hands:  when a player is seriously injured, when a kicker is lining up for a game-winning FG, some offensive linemen when they're in obvious passing downs (don’t see this too often anymore), kickoff return wedge guys (sometimes).

its not uncommon alot of times they hold hands when one of their teammates are hurt as well
theirs nothing wrong with it
